East Europe Won't Help
Israel in Eichmann Case

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

JERUSALEM—Israel drew vir-
tually a total blank in response
to requests to several East Euro-
pean countries to supply evidence
on the activities in those countries
of Adolf Eichmann, it was dis-
closed Wednesday.
More than two months ago
Israel appealed to all such
countries having any information
whatever on the man who di-
rected the extermination of
European Jewry to provide help
in the preparation of his trial.
The only country to give a
positive reply, it was reported,
was Yugoslavia, which promised
help. After repeated appeals, one
Communist bloc country replied
with a statement it had no ma-

terial dealing with Eichmann's
Nazi activities.
This negative response, it was
noted, conflicted sharply with
the many articles and statements
in the Soviet bloc press, after
the announcement last May 23 of
Eichmann's seizure welcoming the
arrest and urging punishment.
Israel officials said that
absence of East European
operation would not delay
start of the Eichmann trial be-
cause sufficient evidence was
available from other sources.
Israel, however, sought ma-
terial from East Europe, a major
theater of Eichmann's extermina-
tion efforts, to obtain at the trial
the fullest possible picture of the
holocaust suffered by European
Jewry.

Eichmann's Lawyer Israel-Bound;
Argentina Is Cordial Once Again

COLOGNE, (JTA) — Robert
Servatius, the Cologne lawyer
who will defend Adolf Eich-
mann, the Nazi who directed
the annihilation of 6,000,000
Jews, left for Israel Monday.
Prior to his departure he
told the correspondent of the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency that
he hopes to be able to speak to
Eichmann immediately after he
arrives in Israel. He also said
that he expected the Eichmann
trail would take place some
time in March or April.
The Justice Ministry had sug-
gested to the West German
lawyer that he come to Israel
to familiarize himself with all
particulars of the case in spite
of the fact that the Knesset has
not yet passed a special law
enabling Servatius to appear ii
an Israel court despite his fo
eign nationality. The Minis
had indicated that there
little doubt that the law wo
be passed.
It was understood that Ser
vatius would be permitted to
meet Eichmann during his visit
and that he would confer with
Attorney General Gideon Haus-
ner.
