Gabriel Heatter was for many
years the idol of a large
audience that listened to his
radio news commentaries. He
remains to this day a favorite
with the tens of thousands who
continue to hear his daily
broadcasts, from his present
home in Miami Beach, over 400
stations affiliated with the Mu-
tual Broadcasting System.
His interesting career is de-
scribed in his autobiographical
story, "There's Good News To-
night," which has just been pub-
lished by Doubleday. It is a
very human story about a man
who started his career . as a
political campaigner for Wil-
liam Randolph Hearst in 1906.
He was then only 16. Then
began his newspaper experi-
ences that eventually led him
to radio broadcasting.
Heatter describes his child-
hood on the East Side of New
York. His father he writes, "was
an orthodox Jew, but remark-
ably liberal." The elder Heatter
had come from Hungary at the
age of 16. He wore a high hat
and a Prince Albert coat to the
synagogue on the High Holi-
days. But he insisted: "I am
not God's policeman;" and he
therefore told a friend that if
he refrained from smoking on
the Sabbath in his home not
to offend him he'd rather his
friend didn't come at all. "That
was my father," writes Gabriel.
His life's story is interesting.
As a youth, he organized a news-
paper called Weekly Reporter.
There were failures, struggles,
uphill battles to succeed, but
he finally made good.
•He met and soon married
Saidie Her m a l i n, a school
teacher, daughter of David Her-
malin, of the Yiddish daily
Day who, was a playwright ancif
newspaper editor. They had a
happy life. but it was not always
easy sledding, especially when,
during a short stay in London,
Gabriel was stricken with fear.
It was a struc, cile for self-

e one of the best
kno
amen in the land—so
stirring were his descrip-
ions of the case and his com-
ments upon it. His autobiog-
raphy offers a thorough de-
scription of that experience.
Then came many important
assignments—the Franklin D.
Roosevelt era, the rise of Hit-
lerism, the second world con-
flict: the battle of nerves.
In the course of his activities,
he met the world's great—presi-
dents, statesmen, men in the
newspaper and entertainment
world.
His major bit of advice, as
he winds up his story, as he
relates the happiness of his
home, is a warning against fear.
Having experienced it himself,
he says it can happen to any-
one. "But in the end," he states,
"fear retreats and fear sur-
renders." "The climbing is the
essence," he asserts, revealing
his secret of his climb with the
admonition: "Keep marching!
Let your drums be heard!"

Put on too much speed ahead
and you're sure to meet reverses.
