Israel's Cantors --Lona Tradition of Piety

Happy New Year to Our Friends and Patrons

returned to Prague in 1880
where he died in 1901.
Morris Goldstein was born in
Hungary in 1840, the son of Haz-
zan Shmelke, a singer who died
young in 1849 leaving ten small
children. The oldest boy, Jos-
eph, who was 11 at his father's
death, succeeded his father.
Later he gained fame as hazzan
in Vienna where he worked
from 1858 to 1899. He studied
music in Vienna, was called to
New York to accept the posi-
tion as cantor in the Norko
Synagogue. Later he went to
Cincinnati and sang there in
Bnai Israel Temple. He held
this position until he died in
1906.
These hazzanim compiled a

collection of songs in Hebrew,
English and German, published
in New York from 1871 to 1886
in four volumes.
There is a rich literature de-
voted to the interest of the
hazzan. The most famous is by
the German Aron Friedman
"Lebensbilder der beruehmten
Cantoren", (Berlin 1918 to
1927).
The "Jewish Ministers Asso-
ciation of America" in New
York has published a history
of the Hazzanuth in Yiddish
(1924).
Josef (Yossele) Rosenblatt
was among the great U.S. haz-
zanim. There were many others
who were outstanding -singers in
Israel.
