Swede Relates Jewish Life in N.Y. 200 Years Ago

More than two centuries ago
New York Jewry was already
living Jewishly and enjoying a
secure existence, according to
Dr. Jacob R. Marcus, historian
of American Jewish life.
Dr. Marcus, professor of
American Jewish history at
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion and direc-
tor of its American Jewish Ar-

chives, documents his assertion
with a picture of mid-18th cen-
tury Jewish life, drawn from
the diary of Peter Kalm, a
Swedish visitor.
Kalm's journal, translated
into English and published in
1770 under the title "Travels
into North America," describes
religious practices and social
and economic activities of New

York Jewry in colonial times.
In contrast to Sweden, where
scarcely a Jew was to be found
in that day, and to England,
where .prejudice denied na-
turalization to even the most
outstanding foreign-born Jews,
Kalm found New York Jews en-
joying an enviably secure ex-
istence.
"There are," Kalm wrote in
November, 1748, "many Jews
settled in New York, who pos-
sess great privileges. They
have a synagogue and houses,
great country-seats of their own
property, and . . . they enjoy
all the privileges common to
other inhabitants of this town
and province."
Sabbath observance was ap-
parently general among them,
for Kalm noted that "these peo-
ple never boiled any meat for
themselves on Saturday, but
they always did it the day be-
fore; and that in winter they
kept a fire (going continuously)
during the whole Saturday."
While most Jews were obser-
vant, life in the new land made
strict dietary regulation diffi-
cult.
"They commonly eat no
pork," Kahn wrote. "Yet I have
been told by several men of
credit that many of them
(especially among young Jews)
when travelling, did not make
the least difficulty about eat-
ing this or any other meat that
was put before them; even
though they were in company
with Christians."
Kalm's account of Jewish life
in New York during the 1740's
is to be found in "The Jew in
the Mediev " edited by

Jewish stockbrokers
never exceeded twelve in num-
ber. Each broker had to "enter
a bond" of £500. This was a
guarantee that he would per-
form his duties as broker faith-
fully, failing which the sum was
forfeited.
Brokers' medals could be
transferred from one person to
another. As no business could
be done on the stock exchange
without one, medals were much
sought after and there was al-
ways keen competition when a
broker wished to dispose of his
medal. The Jew Broker Medals,
as those owned by Jews were
named, changed hands at prices
of over £1,000.
The last Jew Broker Medal
was sold in 1826.
