The stellar role of American Jews in the expanding space ex- ploration program of the United States was again dramatized during the year when the Air Force launched two satellites in June with a single rocket—a spectacular "first" in the space race with the Soviets. For Dr. Herbert Friedman, a 43-year-old expert in the field of rocket astronomy, the twin- launch was an unusual example of a reward for patience. Dr. Friedman, who dilects a team of specialists at the Naval Re- search laboratory, had been working for more than three years on the idea of using satel- lites to study the ultra-violet and X-rays generated by the sun. Khoury was chosen for the job by the U.S. Committee for Sports in Israel, together with the State Department, because the man has proved himself a remarkable baseball organizer. In 1937 he started a baseball league (his own sons were the motive for his interest) and today the George Khoury As- sociation of Baseball Leagues, Inc., is the largest independent group of its kind in the world. It is in 12 states, Canada and the Panama Canal,. with more than 75,000 boys performing on more than 2,000 teams!
