Prof. Ellmann Wrote Preface to Columbia
University Volume; Wins Book Award

He has written the foreword
to "Edwardians and Late Vic-
torians: English Institute Es-
says, 1959," just published by
Columbia University Press. In
his preface he states:
"Literary history often seems
to be a struggle between books
and the epithets applied to
them and sometimes epithets
temporarily and unfairly van-
quish books. The writers of the
nineties suffer from being car-
icatured, the Edwardians from
being disregarded."
The Edwardian years of 1900-
910 have lost their identity by
eing labeled "post-Victorian"
r "pre-war," according to Prof.
llmann.
Prof. Richard Ellmann, son
of Judge and Mrs. James I.
EIlman, of 55 Connecticut, High-
land Park, has gained worldwide
fame as winner of this year's
National Books Award for his
biography of James Joyce. He
is recognized as an authority
on Joyce and Yeats.
Dr. Ellmann, who is professor
. of English at Northwestern Uni-
versity, has another distinction
to his credit. He is frequently
called upon to review important
