• Jane Addams Centennial Reealls Ties to Jewish Community Center As the world honors centennial year of Jane Addams, famed champion of the poor and friendless and founder of Chicago's Hull House, it is worth - recalling that during all her years in Chicago she had close ties with the leaders of the Jewish community, and particularly those associated with Jewish Community Centers and the National Jewish Welfare Board. This long forgotten photograph dramatically epitomizes those ties. It was taken in 1933 at a dinner honoring Jacob M. Loeb, (6th from left), who was retiring as president of the Jewish People's Institute, now part of the Chicago Jewish Corn- Munity Centers, and as a vice-president of JWB. State of Israel, 200,000 dunams have been covered with wood- land, besides a length of 750 km. of plantations along the highways. Last winter a further 9,000,000 trees were planted in existing forests, and 7,000,000 trees in new places. The ulti- mate goal is to clothe one thou- sand sq. kms. in woods. Up till now about 30,000 dunams have been set yearly, there are nine nurseries in the country, and 7,000 workers earned their living regularly at afforestation. But half of Israel's territory still consists of barren moun- tainsides. In biblical times the land was timbered and settled with a hard-working rural popu- lation. The words of the Bible are the best source of our knowledge; in the Prophets, in Psalms and other passages we find allusions to rural life and to the existence of fruitful and forested regions green with many kinds of trees. If you visit the historic sites of Israel or want to picture for yourself how people lived in ancient times, you must imagine a quite different scene. Experts in afforestation as- sure us that the climate of the country has not changed since olden days; their hy- pothesis is based on the frag- ments of forests still linger- ing as well as on finds of roots and of bones of forest animals in the soil.
