green agave buShes which recall in The agave fibres are stronger than

their outer form the cactuses of
tropical countries. But these bushes
do not grow wild. The hands of
Israeli farmers take care of them.
The agaves need little attention and
grow where no , agricultural plant
can succeed in growing. The small
amount of rain that falls in this
region (100 mm. per annum) is suf-
ficient to sustain this plant.
What is the purpose of cultivating
agaves? From the long green leaves
of the plant the sisal fibres are

any other fibre, and the fibres of
the Israel agaves are very long,
, heavy and strong.
I Today the agave bushes in Israel
• cover an area of 8,000 dunami. It
is now intended to increase this
area to 20,000 dunams and set up in
the neighbourhood a cordage fac-
tory. In this way employment will
i be given to hundreds of families.
