CARD OF THANKS The family of the late Mary Salter acknowledges with grate- ful appreciation the many kind expressions of sympathy ex- tended b_y relatives and friends during the family's recent bereavement. tinguishes these prayers from other prayers is the fact that they are not usually an integral part of a- service; they are prayers which are recited on certain special days of the calendar when it is customary to ask for forgiveness from the Almighty. Because they are such prayers, they are called Selihot (the plural of forgiveness). In our times, it is the group of special penitential prayers recited - before the High Holidays and those re- cited in the period following Rosh Hashanah and concluding with Yom Kippur, that are best known to us as "Selihot." According to the Mishnah (Ta'anit, Ch. 2), the service on fast days were opened with special prayers calling upon the people to repent. These were probably the earliest public formal "Selihot." Tradition has it that the Almighty told Moses (according to some sources, He told Adam) that when the neonle of Israel would sin and then seek to rectify their misgiving, they were to chant Selihot pray- ers to Him and this would lead to Divine pardon. The first Sid- dur (R. Amaram 856-874) al- ready contains some Selihot to- gether with the usual prayers. The writings of Hai Gaon (11th Century) shows that Selihot were recited an entire month be- fore Rosh Hashanah, during the whole month of Elul. It was the preparation before the Day of Judgment which apparently was the important time for Selihot. Some Sephardic communities still continue this practice. Most of our contemporary communities, however, begin with a Saturday night which occurs at least four days before Rosh Hashanah. Two reasons are advanced for this practice. One is that man is - com- pared to the animal sacrifice which traditionally reauired four days of supervision before it was offered on the altar. On Rosh Ha- shanah, man doesn't rely upon other means of sacrifice - he himself offers his being upon the altar of judgment on high. Another reason advanced is that the basic requirement is to have ten days of penitence during which Selihot are recited, end- ing with Yom Kippur. Since four days of the ten days of penitence (which begin with Rosh Hasha- nah) are such upon which no Selihot are recited (i.e. two days of Rosh Hashanah, the Sab- bath of Repentence, and the day before Yom Kippur) the four days must be made at least four, days before Rosh Hashanah.
