The Talmudic Sages traced the origin of the custom of the rabbi's sermon, usually d ered on the Sabbath, to •ar- of Moses (Yalkut S om enting shas Va-Yakhel) a 1 statement upon the B i b that Moses "as- (Exodus 35: people of Israel sembled" t the Rabbi • omment that it w Moses' • ctice to make .large gatheri s on the Sabbath as • to add ss them concernin the Sabbath, td laws se them i assemble in the of W ship and study on the Sabb. , to learn and listen to the di ussions of our tradition- al law and practices. Historic- ally, it 'claimed that th . . mated mon wa• of Torah on with the rea • I. the Sabbath. When the language of the street differed from that of the original Biblical Hebrew, a translation and interpretation of the Bible reading was offered along with the reading itself. This eventually led to the prac- tice of delivering a sermon on the Sabbath sometime after the scripture reading. The sermon was originally as- sociated with the reading of the scriptures. Thus the time was, either after the scripture read- ing on Sabbath morning or be- fore the scripture reading on Sabbath afternoon. At certain times the afternoon sermon was most popular among the laity who w o u l d assemble in the House of Worship or study, coming there from surrounding areas. It is also known that Fri- day night was an occasion for this too—mostly in a sense of actual learning and study. Gen- erally speaking, it should be pointed out that while moral improvement was one of the desired achievements of the ser- mon, nevertheless, this was only a by-product of the process of study. The practice of preaching as we know it today, completely geared to moral improvem and rarely intended for s y was not originally a R inic innovation.
