NEW YORK—An official of
the Readers' Digest Magazines,
International Operations, t o 1 d
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
Wednesday that he knew noth-
ing about a report that orders
from Israel for an Arabic lang-
uage edition for the periodical
had been rejected.
Paul Thompson, general man-
ager of International Editions
for Readers Digest, said at the
periodical's international head-
quarters at Pleasantville N. Y.,
that a circulation representative
was leaving soon for a tour of the
Middle East and that the repre-
sentative would be asked to in-
vestigate the report.
According to the report pub-
lished Monday by the Jerusalem
Post. the magazine refused to
meet the order because of "un-
specified regulations." The Post
quoted the central subscription
agency's private firm which im-
ports many periodicals as say-
ing that the refusal was in com-
pliance with the Arab boycott
or because the Arab edition
contained anti-Israel material
which The Reader's Digest pub-
lisher preferred Israelis not to

i read. The subscription agency
said it had ordered copies of
the Arabic Edition for Israel's
Arab speaking population and
that after a year of silence the
Reader's Digest notified the sub-
scription agency it could not
fulfill the order.

Simon & Schuster
Publish Joseph's
'Faithful City'

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Simon
and Schuster announce publica-
tion next month of "The Faith-
ful City—The Siege of Jerusa-
lem, 1948," by Dr. Dov Joseph,
who was the city's Military Gov-
ernor at the time.
Newspaper excerpts of the
book published in Israel aroused
a storm of controversy there and
a Parliamentary debate over
charges by Dr. Joseph that the
Old City of Jerusalem need not
have fallen to the Arabs. Dr.
Joseph blamed Moshe Sharett,
then Foreign Minister, for being
over-exact in complying with
United Nations directives, and
criticized Brig. David Shaltiel,
commander of Israel forces in
the Jerusalem area, for tactical
errors.
The publishing house will also
bring out a deluxe, autographed
and boxed edition of the book.
