The next day, Oct. 31, Mein-

news that British planes are

"Meinertzhagen speculates
further: "I would like to ask
Gaitskell what he would have
done if he had been Prime Min-

on the United Nations to en-
force peace. . . And to protect
the Canal which is vital to our
interests and the happiness and
prosperity of England, would he
have allowed matters to drift
until Russian troops and planes
arrived in the Middle East?"
After the collapse of Eden's
action, our Colonel is, of course,
furious. . . . He enters in his
Diary these sad words: "Never
in my life has a Prime Minister
and a Government made such a
criminal mess of a situation
which could have been solved
by firmness and common sense.
.. . The only result of Eden's
impotence is to lay bare the im-
potence of the United Nations.

Allies has given Russia a free
hand and if Russia became
more aggressive and threatened
a hot war, she need fear no
united Western Front. . . .
Eden's folly has been made
worse by the action of- the
United States who was more
intent on crippling us than
standing up to Russia. . . . The
Suez Canal remains in the hands
of the defated (by Israel) Nas-
ser who is now dictating to the
United Nations. . . . Never has
Britain sunk so low; never has
Britain been governed by such
imcompetence."

Refugee Problem Acute
Church Council Says

LONDON, (JTA)—The Central
Committee of the World Council
of Churches issued a warning
that the refugee problem re-
mains on a tragic and dangerous
level despite World Refugee
Year.
The department of inter-
church aid of the Council re-
ported that "multitudes of refu-
gees have not yet been helped
and their plight is made worse
because of disappointed expecta-
tions." The report warned it
was imperative that all agencies
of assistance, including the
United Nations, should continue
their efforts to aid them.

Orthodox Congregations Form Union in India

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations of India, represent-
ing two-thirds of the 27,000
Jews in that country, has been
established there, it was re-
ported by Rabbi Charles Wein-
berg, president of the Rabbini-
cal Council of America. The
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations in the United States
will send a rabbi to India to
serve as spiritual leader to the
Jewish populace, he said.
Rabbi Weinberg announced
the formation of the Indian
Orthodox Union following his
return from that country, where
he addressed the convention
of the new organization. He
said that the Indian Jewish
group known as Bene Israel,
numbering 21,000 persons, had
"maintained itself as a distinc-
tive community in India for
more than 2,000 years and had
remained • unshakably devoted
to traditional Judaism." , The

new Union also represents a
group of Indian Jews known
as "Iraqis," who came to India
from Iraq 250 years ago.
A committee of five leading
members of both Indian com-
munities was chosen by the
founding convention to serve
as a council to which all religi-
ous questions and communal
problems will be brought, Rab-
bi Weinberg reported. He said
the council will refer all mat-
ters requiring authoritative re-
ligious decisions to recognized
religious authorities in Israel,
the United States and Britain.
