studied in the Slonim Yeshiva
and received his kabalah for his
studies in shehita.
Coming to this country towards
the end of the last century, he
held a position as cantor in
Reading, Pa. From 1906 to 1926
he was cantor in Toledo.
He then came to Detroit and
became cantor of the Holbrook
Synagogue, and a year later was
named assistant cantor at Shaarey
Zedek.
In recent years he also held
cantorial posts in Miami Beach.
He is a member of Bnai Brith,
United Hebrew Schools, Zionist
Organization • and other move-
ments in Detroit.
Rev. Silverman has four daugh-
ters, Evelyn Leib and Florence
Pearlman, of Los Angeles; Riva
Katz, of Toledo, and Pearl Green-
field, of Atlantic City.

yim, bringing the number of
participating synagogues, to
date, to 21.
The Bond High Holy Day
Religious Council anticipates
that the rest of Detroit's syna-
gogues will complete their plans
for this year's appeals by the
time of the pre-High Holy Day
rally, on Sunday, Sept. 11, in
conjunction with the postponed
annual Bondholders meeting
and a special Women's Division
installation session.

Tzvi Berkal
A native of

Winnipeg, Canada, and a grad-
uate of the Winnipeg Talmud
Torah, Berkal holds a B.A. de-
gree from Wayne State Univers-
ity. He has served on the staffs
of United Hebrew Schools,
Workmen's Circle Schools, Con-
gregations Shaarey Zedek, Bnai
David, and Beth Shalom. Until
recently he was the assistant
regional director for Michigan
of the Bnai Brith Youth Organi-
zation, and was leader of the Li-
vonia Jewish Congregation.
Berkel has lived and studied
in Israel. He is married and the
father of one son.
