Future Looks Bright for
Israel's Diamond Production

Israel's produotion of gem
diamonds is now approximately
one-third of Belgium's and may
rise to half of Belgium's pro-
duction in the not-too-distant
future. An economic survey by
Barclay's Bank Overseas in Lon-
don found Israel's diamond out-
put, which increased by 40 per
cent in 1958, still rising rapidly.

Exempt Jewish Pupils
from Religious Class
in 2 Toronto Schools

TORONTO, (JTA) — Parents
of Jewish children attending
two Toronto schools will here-
after have the option of obtain-
ing exemption of attendance by
their children at classes in re-
ligious instruction. Under On-
tario provincial law, such class-
es must be provided in schools
all of which, in Canada, are
operated under Christian de-
nominational auspices.
The compromise plan was ar-
ranged for Cedar Grove and
North Wilmington schools in
Toronto. It provides that par-
ents will be asked, during regis-
tration periods, to state their
preference regarding participa-
tion by their children in re-
ligious classes which have been
shifted to a half hour between
3:30 and 4 p.m. weekly.
The compromise formula' was
agreed on after numerous meet-
ings attended by Mrs. Dorothy
Bishop, the Board of Education
trustee for Ward Five of Toron-
to, and representatives of the
Canadian Jewish Congress and
local rabbis. In announcing the
new plan, -Mrs Bishop said that
"evolution, not revolution, is
the aim. We want to avert. bad
feelings."
Education officials in North
York Township are studying a
similar 'proposal to change their
school schedules so that religi-
ous education will be held dur-
ing the last hour of the school
day. The proposal was offered
by a group of Jewish and non-
Jewish parents who do not wish
their children to attend such
classes.

ternational conference of Jew-
ish journalists and writers will

Congress in December, accord-
ing to a decision reached here
by the Jewish Agency and the
Israel Journalists Association.
The importance of such a
conference had been stressed

cussions by the Association

Philadelphia Rabbi
Probes Mystery of
Mexico Jewish Tribe

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Rabbi Victor Solomon of Cong.
Ezr 'h Israel is spending two
weeks in the Mexican village of
Venta Prieta with a mestizo
tribe whose members claim
Jewish ancestry. (The mestizos
are the mixed blood descend-
ants of the Spanish invaders
and the Indians.)
The villagers were long af-
filiated with the Iglesia de Dios
sect but claim Marrano an-
cestry and, in recent years,
have sought to observe the
Jewish religion.
There are reported to be only
18 families, but some reports
say there may be as many as
30,000 persons. The village is
Central Mexico, a long and
difficult trip from the capital,
reached only by primitive
roads.
Rabbi Solomon took with him
cameras, a movie camera and a
battery-poWered tape-recorder
in order to record what he may
be able to learn of these people.
He said he would be the first
outsider to live among them,
although others had visited the
village.
"I doubt if I'll be able to
actually solve the riddle of their
ancestry," he said before his
departure, "but at least I'll find
out more than has been pre-
viously known."

Israel Postpones Ruling
on Bar-Ilan Sanction

ever, they were suppressed be-
cause it was feared that they
might provoke pity for Jews
even among Nazis.
They are now incorporated in
a two-hour documentary anti-
Hitler picture which carries the
title "Mein Kampf" and is at-
tracting large audiences in West
German theatres.
The .producer of "Mein
Kampf" is an expatriate of Ber-

terprise made with no subsidy
from the West German Govern-
ment. He assembled his material
from cinema libraries in the -
archives of various countries. •
The film depicting the' Nail
atrocities in the Warsaw ghetto
—and the misery under which
the Jew's liVed there—was dis-
covered . by. the* producer, who
is now a Swedish citizen, in an
East Berlin library.
