Synagogues Use Begin Construction of $200,000
JNF Stamps on Classroom Wing to Temple Israel
Holy Day Tickets

Detroit and out-state syna-
gogues again will attach Jewish
National Fund stamps to all
tickets purchased for attend-
ance at High Holy Day services,
according to the Jewish Na-
tional Fund Council.
The stamps this year com-
memorate two events: the
twelfth year of the State of
Israel, and the centenary of the
birth of Dr. Theodor Herzl.
Synagogue ticket committees
are requested to utilize the JNF
stamps to decorate their holi-
day admission tickets. Each
stamp is to be issued as a
receipt in acknowledgement of
a fitting contribution to the
cause of "Geulath Ha'aretz,"
the JNF program of land
reclamation.
In their appeal to syna-
gogues, Phillip Stollman and
Norman Allan, co-chairmen of
the religious groups committee,
stated:
"The Jewish National Fund,
which, in the last ten years,
paved the way for the estab-
lishment of 600 colonies, in-
cluding 400 located on Israel's
borders, has the important task
of securing the borders of Me-
dinat Israel by increasing the
number of settlements.
"Now that the Jewish Na-
tional Fund has become the
exclusive agency to develop, re-
claim, and afforest all the land
in Israel, we are confident that
the leaders of Jewish religious
life appreciate the need of con-
tinuing assistance in tasks con-
fronting the Keren Kayemet
L'Israel."
&oilman and Allan have
asked ticket committees to call
UN. 4-2767, or write the JNF
office, 18414 Wyoming, if they
have not received their supply,
or, if they require additional
stamps.

Jewish Congress Raps
Boy Scout Applications
with Religious Question

NEWARK, N.J., (JTA)—The
American Jewish Congress of-
fice here sent a protest to the
State Commissioner of Educa-
tion against the distribution of
Boy Scout applications through
the New Jersey public school
systems. On such application
blanks the question is asked:
"What is your religious prefer-
ence?"
The A. J. Congress objected
to the use of the public school
system for the distribution of
the applications on the grounds
that this is a violation of the
Constitution as it makes the
school system "an adjunct to a
religious census,"
Last week it received a reply
frorn Eric Groezinger, assistant
commissioner of education, to
a request for an opinion on the
constitutionality of the distri-
bution of the applications in the
public schools. In his reply,
Groezinger said:
"In our opinion the circula-
tion of such a pamphlet to
school pupils during school
hours, by and with the permis-
sion of school authorities or
through the use of the public
school 'machinery' such as at-
tendance requirements is im-
proper and should not be per-
mitted. On the other hand, the
distribution of such material to
their own membership by
groups who are granted the use
of the school premises for their
meetings or activities is outside
the jurisdiction of the local
school authorities and would not
be improper."

Hebrew Yiddish School Announces Registration

WEbster 3-8816 ,

Construction will begin next
week on a $200,000 addition to
Temple Israel, following for-
mal signing of contracts with
the Lerner-Linden Construction
Co.
The new temple facility will
be a classroom wing of 10
rooms to be erected over the
present social hall.
The classrooms will be used
during the week for the con-
gregation's Hebrew school and
weekends by members of the
confirmation class and high
school department.
Rapid expansion of the He-
brew school over the past few
years has necessitated con-
struction of the classroom fa-
cilities at this time, according
to Sol I. Stein, Temple Israel
president.
The school, with an enroll-
ment of 350, is directed by
Rabbi M. Robert Syme. A four-
year course leading to Bar or
Bas Mitzvah, as well as post Bar
Mitzvah classes, is conducted.
The school also will house
the congregation's College of
Jewish Studies organized by
Dr. Leon Fram.
Stein said that the educa-
tional unit is the third phase
of the temple's building pro-
gram, which began in 1950
with the erection of its 1,500-
seat sanctuary.
In 1956, the Leon Fram Hall,
named in honor of Dr. Fram,
was erected as the social center
of the congregation.
Together, the three Temple
Israel facilities will cost an ag-
gregate sum of well over a mil-
lion dollars, according to Les-
li- R. Schmier, chairman of the
building fund.
The classroom wing will be
completed for use early in
1961.
Funds for the unit are being
raised through a "cash cam-
paign" currently being conduct-
ed under the leadership of
Robert S. Trepeck, chairman of
the building fund.

Law, be it civic or religious,

explicates the 613 Biblical
Commandments.
It is the first volume of ex-
tensive commentaries on these_
Commandments to be published
in English.
Rabbi Goldstein's book, "Be-
tween the Lines of the Bible,"
was published by Crown Pub-
lishers, New .York.
