Eshkol Reports on
Israel's Exports to
Nigeria and Ghana

JERUSALEM. (JTA) —
Israel's exports to Nigeria and
Ghana are expected to total five
million pounds (approximately
$2,750,000) each this year, Fi-
nance Minister Levi Eshkol
declared here.
Speaking at the Journalists
Club here after returning from
a tour of West Africa, Eshkol
told of his impressions of the
newly emerging African states.
He dispelled the impression
that North Nigeria's Moslems
were anti-Israel. He said that at
a recent Pan-African confer-
ence held in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, the Nigerian delega-
tion "stood firm" against Egyp-
tian pressure to commit the
conference to an anti-Israel
resolution:

Israel Finance
Minister to Spur
U.S. Investments

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire

TEL AVIV,—Levi Eshkol, Is-
rael's Finance Minister, is corn-
ing to the United States next
month to explore the possibili-
ties of further American invest-
ments in Israel and to try to
reach an agreement with the In-
ternational Bank for Recon-
struction and development for a
loan to aid industrial develop-
ment of the Dead Sea Potash
Work s, it was revealed here
Tuesday. Possibilities for fur-
ther investments in Israel will
also be discussed by Eshkol,
during the September tour, with
financier's in England and
France.
At the present, Eshkol said
he is trying to face up to in-
creased governmental expenses
caused by an increase in salaries
for schoolteachers which may
run into "several million
pounds."
He promised that extra ex-
penses would be raised without
new taxation. Added monies, he
said, would come from increased
duties on certain imports.

Hias Foresees More Refugee Immigrants Under New U.S. Law

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
number of refugees who will be
resettled in the United States
under the new immigration law,
including Jewish refugees, may
very well be higher than pre-
vious estimates, James P. Rice,
executive director of United
Elias Service, stated. He noted
that the new law signed by
President Eisenhower on July
14 provides for the admission to
the U.S. of up to 25 percent of
the number of United Nations
mandated refugees admitted to
other countries between July,
1959 and July, 1961.
According to the official
report of the State Department,
required by this law, 17,744
mandated refugees were re-
settled in countries other than
the U.S. from July 1, 1959
through June 30, 1960. The
initial State Department report,
therefore, indicates a first year
quota allocation for the U.S. of
4,436. Similar reports are to be
issued in January and July, 1961
for future admissions, giving,
rise to the belief that admis-
sions under the law will exceed
estimates, some of which fore-
cast a ceiling of approximately
5,000 during the next two years.
While pointing out the im-
possibility of forecasting at the

present time the number of
Jewish refugees who will bene-
fit, Mr. Rice called attention to
the fact that under previous
emergency immigration legisla-
tion, 2,679 Jewish refugees from
the Middle East and Eastern
Europe were among the 14,500
approved for admission to the

U.S. With this in mind, United
Hias Service offices in the U.S.
and overseas are alerting pro-
spective Migrants and the mem-
bers of their families in this
country to the need to register
without delay in order to avail
themselves of the opportunities
offered by the new law.

Latvian Nazi Admits
in Brazil to Killing of
Jews in Riga Ghetto

RIO DE JANEIRO, (JTA) —
Herbert Cukurs, a former Lat-
vian SS officer charged with re-
sponsibility for the extermina-
tion of 32,000 Jews in the Riga
Ghetto during the Second World
War, has admitted that he killed
a number of Jews during the
Nazi occupation of Latvia.
Cukurs made the admission in
an interview published in the
Brazilian influential paper "0
Jornal." Asked about the
charges, the former Nazi told
Eduardo Ramalho, the paper's
correspondents, - that "I cannot
deny that I killed several Jews."
Attorneys for Cukurs, mean-
while, are planning to appeal to
President Juscelino Kubitschek
to countermand a decision by
Justice Minister Armano Falcao,
rejecting an application for
Brazilian citizenship filed by
the former Nazi. Informed
sources here indicated that
President Kubitschek would
turn down the appeal.
