Novygrod claims pride in his Jewish origin and deems him- self loyal to the Jewish faith despite his marriage to an ob- servant Catholic girl. The Cu- ban official asserts that because of his preoccupation with the revolution he had to forego his Jewish education. He empha-. sizes, however, that an older brother "was truly Yiddish and that a younger brother is being sent to heder in Havana." He says that he is "inspired and proud of the Jewish state of Israel," and stated that Cuba's 15,000 Jews have a beau- tiful synagogue, two Yiddish newspapers as well as publica- tions in Spanish.
