I OurietterBox Takes Issue With JTA Report on Pope & Jews Editor, The Jewish News: I would like to register a strong objection to the mislead- ing article which appeared un- der the heading "Charge Late Pope Failed to Save Jews from Nazis," which originated from Rome via the Jewish Telegraph- ic Agency and appeared in The Jewish News on Aug. 12. The correspondent quoted "a liberal newspaper here, Paese Sera." Paese Sera can hardly be characterized as an Italian lib- eral journal. The newspaper has served as a "liberal-front" outlet for the Partito Comunista Italian° since its inception. This newspaper has its editorial direction under the auspices of the Communist Party; its news content is designed to deceive the uninitiated into believing that the editors are champions of the liberal cause. Suffice to say, the editorial offices of both II Paese Sera and 1'Unita (the official organ of the PCI) are located at Via IV Novembre, 149. I can assure the JTA cor- respondent that the substantive content of his quoted article appeared under the aegis of Togliatti or one of his hench- men, dictating the current party line. I trust that my comments will not be interpreted as a defense of Eugenio Pacelli Pope Pius XII. The role of the Pope will be determined by the objective historian only when the full materials will be made available for analysis. LEONARD W.
