Buys Goebel Brewing Co.'s Plant

Israel Scores Unprecedented
Venture in Business, High Seas

By HARVEY ZUCKERBERG
Israel scored another first
this week with an unprecedent-
ed venture in big business and
the high seas.
The _Cabeer Brewery Ltd.
has purchased one of Detroit's
Goebel Brewing Co. plants for
shipment to Israel.
It will be the first time
that an entire plant of this
size has been purchased in
one country to be transported
across the Atlantic and the
Mediterranean and re-estab-
lished in another nation.
W. E. Robinson, owner of
a number of breweries in the
world and chairman of the
board of Cabeer, was in De-
troit Tuesday to announce the
economic coup. He disclosed
details of the transaction to
a small gathering of business-
men aboard Israel Zim Lines'
St. S. Dagan, berthed at De-
troit's Harbor Terminal.
Dismantled and moved to
dockside by Dearborn Machin-
ery Movers Co., Inc., the first
installment of the $3,000,000
brewing plant was being load-
ed in the cavernous holds of
the Dagan. The Zim Lines'
Shomron arrived in Detroit
from Israel on Thursday for
the second shipment.
The moving operation will
entail at least four more boat-
loads in a race to beat the ice
and the closing deadline of the
St. Lawrence Seaway on Nov.

bis and will be closed on the
Sabbath and all official holi-
days."
The small group was delight-
ed, also, by a few words from
their co-host, Capt. Kurt Hei-
man of the Dagan. His ship,
Heiman told them, has a 7,000-
ton capacity and was built
in Germany in 1954 as part
reparations. It has a crew of
38.
"We look forward to bring-
ing you our wonderful beer in
10 months," he told the Detroit
business leaders.
The plant will produce 600,-
000 barrels per year, Robinson
said, and added, "We hope to
export $2,000,000 to $3,000,000
worth to you, with God's help."
"And we wish you a hot
summer," someone replied.

JERUSALEM—The Knesset
passed a child adoption law
Tuesday night which limits
jurisdiction of rabbinical courts
in cases of disputes over adop-
tion.
The provision limiting rab-
binical jurisdiction was passed
by a vote of 41 to 20, in spite
of the fact that it was hotly
contested by the General Zion-
ists, Herut and the religious
parties, including the National
Religious Party and Poalei Is-
rael who are members of the
government coalition.
The new law requires the

approval of the Ministry of
Social Welfare and the At-
torney General of all decisions
of rabbinic courts affecting
the adoption of children under
13 years of age.
Cases are referred to re-

decision. Hitherto, rabbinical
and civil courts enjoyed para-
llel jurisdiction in such cases.
Another provision of the law
forbids the publication of the
names of the parties • in an
adoption case without their
consent. The law also provides
that the adoption cannot be

finally approved until the child
has spent a trial period of
six months with the adopting
parents. No adoption may be
approved, according to the law,

without the consent of the
parents and of the child, if

the child is old enough to
express consent.

Slates Annual Report at Boesky's

The Detroit Israel Bond Com-
mittee will hold a "Tenth An-
niversary" annual meeting and
Israel Bondholders report on
Sunday, Aug. 21, in the banquet

13.
The total cost of dismantling,
shipment and reassembling the
plant in Bat Yam, Israel, is
estimated at another $1,000,000.

Weight of the machinery and
157 mammoth-sized, glass-lined
brewing tanks is close to 15,000
tons and covered 70,000 square
feet when installed at:the form-
er Goebel plant site . at the foot
of Dubois St. It will travel some
5,000 miles.
"This is just a part of the
program of building up Israel,"
said Robinson. "We have to
win the economic battle, and
the economic battle is export.
We can't live on import alone."
Robinson paid tribute to the
financiers who made the pur-
chase possible. The transac-
tion was completed on June 9.
"Foreign investors helped us
to buy this brewery," he said.
"They are tax free for five
years as encouragement and
they are necessary if we are
to succeed. Don't forget. them."
The entrepreneur - business
magnate said he hopes the
plant will be in operation with-
in 10 months. It will be housed
in a building "riddled with but-
ets" that served as a defense
post in the town of Belt Vegen,
now called Bat Yam.
Its population is 45,000 and
the plant will create employ-
ment for 1,000 families.
"And don't forget that,
either," Robinson said. "It is
most important for our econ-
omy. Also, the plant will be

Defies Kuwait's
Boycott Notice

The Arab boycott office has
stretched its ugly campaign
into Detroit. A copy of the
stock letter, warning merch-

to Tzvi Wachtel, of Cafe Gal-

Wachtel's reply was to in-

On Tuesday, he picked up 16
cases of such objects that ar-
rived for him from Israel on
the S. S. Dagan.
