JERUSALEM — The Knesset
enacted into law the Land Au-
thority Bill, grantin. the Jew-
ish National Fund the exclusive
right to soil improvement and
afforestation of the whole ter-
ritory of the State of Israel.
The law also provides for the
JNF principle ..3f land tenure
based on the Biblical injunction
"the land shall not be sold in
perpetuity", but remain the
eternal property of the whole
Jewish people, to become the
r u 1 e for all collectively-held
land in Israel. Such land, be-
longing to the Jewish National
Fund and to the government of
Israel, accounts for about four-
fifths of all available rea: estate
property in the Jewish State.
The Land Authority was de-
vised to do away with the dupli-
cation of effort in the domains
of soil improvement and affor-
estation in Israel. Until now
this type of work had been done

by both the Jewish National
Fund and the Israel State Agri-
culture Department.
The passage of the Land Au-
thority Law by the Knesset was
mailed by the Keren Kayemet
leaders in Israel as a great vic-
tory and long-overdue apprecia-
tion of the Jewish National
Fund, which, since its inception,
h a s acquired a n d improved
more than three-and-a-half mil-
lion dunams of land and has
plant d 4 1, 0 0 0, 0 0 0 trees
throughout Israel. In New York,
Albert Schiff, president of the
Jewish National Fund of Amer-
ica, hailed the establishment of
the Land Authority as "the be-
ginning of a new chapter not
only in the history of the JNF,
but also in the annals of the
upbuilding of the Jewish State,
which stands to benefit much
from a more efficient system of
land reclamation and land de-
velopment."

The 10 MOST PROFITABLE
DAYS OF THE MONTH...

(Direct JTA Teletype Wire
to The Jewish News)

HAIFA — The Maccabi foot-
ball team will appeal to the
International Football Associa-
tion for $12,000 damages from
the Sofia Lokomotive Sports
Club, it was reported Tuesday.
The appeal arises from the
Lokomotives' breach of contract
with Maccabi to be its host for
a series of games this month
in Bulgaria. The $12,000
claim is to cover expenses in-
curred for the trip including
two weeks hotel expenses for
the players and their escorts.
The Maccabi team was strand-
ed in Athens this week when
promised Bulgarian visas failed
to arrive. A phone call was
made by the Israeli group to
the Sofia club inquiring about
the visas.
The secretary of the club told
the Israelis, "Please believe us.
We can do nothing about it.
Please do not come."

Lodge Will Keep
Trying to Raise
Suez Blockade

CHICAGO, (JTA) — Henry
Cabot Lodge, Republican nomi-
nee for the vice-presidency and
U. S. delegate to the United
Nations, said he favored lift-
ing all restrictions on the use
of the Suez Canal.
He told a press conference
at the close of the Republican
National Convention that he
had tried to obtain compliance.
with the United Nations stand
on Suez transit and announced
that he would keep trying.
Lodge made his remarks in
response to a question by an
Arab newspaperman about com-
pliance by Israel with U. N. re-
solutions. Since the question
was vaguely and confusingly
worded, Lodge assumed it per-
tained to the U. N. position on
Suez transit. Lodge then re-
sponded that he favored the lift-
ing of all restrictions on the
use of the Suez Canal.
