Troth Announced

"The South African govern-
ment's policy is completely an
open door for the Congo refu-
gees, with no distinctions con-
cerning race or creed."
Philips also paid tribute to
the bravery of Elisabethville
Rabbi Levi who refused to leave
the Congo until assured that no
member of his community re
mained in danger.
The Congo situation was de-
scribed as "fluid" by Philips.
He said some refugees had al-
ready gone back to their homes
while others intended to follow
as soon as they were assured
that law and security had been
restored. Philips said some of

day at a meeting of the South
African Jewish Board of Depu-

Philips.
According to Philips, im-
mediate help was proVided for
the refugees when they stream-
ed into nearby Rhodesia. Gustav
Saron, General Secretary of
the Board of Deputies, was sent
to the Rhodesian Copper Belt
area to co-operate with Rho-
desian deputies and the Israel
Consulate in arranging urgent
help. The South African Jewish
Appeal also sent a substantial
grant.
The Jewish refugees escaped
with only the clothes they wore
and the first step was to house
them either in Rhodesia or

Three Israeli Medical Units Start
Working in Congo; Organize Aid

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Three
Israel medical teams dispatched
to the Congo have begun work-
ing in and around Leopoldville.
The largest group has been
assigned to manage the 650-bed
Kitambo Hospital in Leopold-
ville. A smaller group has been
put in charge of the Leopold-
ville municipal Sanitation De-
partment while a third unit is
at work in the Institute of
Tropical Diseases in that city.
A party of Jewish refugees
from Elizabethville arrived
here via Rhodesia with virtually
no possessions other than the
clothes they were wearing.
Jacob Shalom, who owned a
grocery store in the Katanga
capital, said that after his store
was burned by rioters, he fled
to Rhodesia along with many
other white refugees. He said
there were about 1,000 Jewish
refugees from the Congo to
Salisbury.
Among the arrivals here was
an Israeli-born woman, Mrs.
