Workmen's Circle School Decides to Adopt
Name of Abraham Reisen Jewish School

The Workmen's Circle Jew-
ish School, an affiliate of the
United Hebrew Schools, has
changed its name to the Abra-
ham Reisen Jewish School of
the Arbeiter Ring.
This action was taken at a
special meeting of the school
board held July 11.
Discussion as to which name
to use has been going on for
some time, since most Work-
men's Circle schools through-
out the country are named
after prominent Jewish writers.
Abraham Reisen began his
literary career in Russia in the
1890s, and was among those
who helped in the national re-
vival, the rise of Yiddish, and
the decision to fight against
pogroms rather than just en-
dure them. He later came to
America.

The change of name had
previously been approved by
the educational division of the
Workmen's Circle, which has
general supervision over its
many schools in all principal
cities of the United States and
Canada. The Detroit school was
started in 1921 and is now
located at 18340 W. Seven Mile.
Morris Becker, formerly di-
rector of the community school
in Syracuse, N.Y., is arriving
here today to assume director-
ship of the Abraham Reisen
Jewish School. He has had
many year s' experience as
teacher and director in Jewish
schools in New York, Chicago
and Syracuse.
Registration is now open for
the fall term at the school
office, and information can be
obtained by calling KE 7-5440
daily. Parents are urged to
register their children in
advance of the school opening
in order to help in the planning
of transportation and class
schedules.
