will feature the Israel Phil-
harmonic Orchestra, asked that

the night of the event—Nov. 1
—for the perennial occasion
sponsored by the Zionist Or-
ganization of Detroit.
The Israel Orchestra will ap-
pear here at the Masonic Audi-
torium. The conductor will be
Joseph Krips.
Sherman Shapiro is general
chairman of the Balfour Con-
cert committee.

Random House to Buy Beginner Books, Inc.
Random House is in the proc-
ess of acquiring, subject to
ratification and approval by its
shareholders at the annual meet-
ing on Aug. 17, all of the stock
of Beginner Books, Inc., in ex-
change for 25,000 shares of
Random House, Inc.
Beginner Books was incorpo-
rated exactly two years ago to
publish books for children just
learning how to read, with Ran-
dom House acting as distributor.
The series caught on immedi-
ately.
This spring the firm made its
first mailing to schools, and the
three editors, Ted Geisel ("Dr
Seuss"), Helen Geisel and Phyl-
lis Cerf, were all but swamped
by the response. By the fall of
this year, there will be 18 titles
in the line.
