New Pre-Shehita
Method in Canada
Takes Effect Dec. 1

MONTREAL, (JTA)—Efforts
by the Canadian Jewish Con,
gress to assure the free prac-
tice of shehita in Canada have
been brought to a successful
conclusion following the ap-
proval by two of the top rab-
binic authorities in the United
States of a new method of
handling animals prior to she-
hita.
Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik
of Boston and Rabbi Eliezer
Silver of Cincinnati, Ohio, gave
their full approval to a new
method of restraining animals
for slaughter which was de-
veloped by the Canada Packers
of Taranto to comply with new
regulations on humane slaught-
er which come into effect
Dec. 1.
The new handling process
utilizes a restraining pen into
which cattle is directed from a
chute and in which the animal
is confined on both sides while
standing on its feet. The new
restraining process received the
official approval of the Depart-
ment of Agriculture as comply-
ing with the new regulations.
The method also received
the approval of the general
manager of the Ontario Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals who expressed con-
fidence that the Society and the
provincial animal welfare move-
ment would readily accept the
process as "fully complying
with the requirements of hu-
mane slaughter."

The new study units were

witz, associate superintendent
of public schools. The new
units will be introduced when
classes are resumed in the fall.
Incorporated in the study
units will be such topics as
persecution of minority groups
in Hitler's Germany, immigra-
tion laws affecting those of
Asian origin, Jim Crowism and
efforts to end school segrega-
tion.
Maurice B. Fagan, executive

he felt that the inadequacy of
the textbooks would be dimin-
ished by the new study units.
