Esrog Box to be Bond Gift

A significant religious article made in Israel will be awarded
to synagogues for outstanding participation in the High Holiday
campaign this year in behalf of Israel Bonds, it was announced by
Phillip Stollman, Detroit High Holiday Chairman of the Israel
Bond Organization. The award will be a silver-plated container for
the citron-like fruit known in Hebrew as an "Esrog", used during
Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles.
The name Sukkot, meaning "booths", is derived from the
Biblical custom that part of the observance of the week-long holi-
day consisted of the people's - dwelling in booths or tabernacles
"that your generations may know that I made the children of
Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land
of Egypt . . ." (Lev. 24:13).
An integral item in the Sukkot festival, the "esrog" is one of
four different species of plants, including a palm-branch ("lulav"
in Hebrew), three myrtle twigs, and two branches of brook-
willows, all of which are used in the observance .
The esrog cotnainer will be enclosed in a velvet-lined case
which will be inscribed with the name of the synagogue receiving
the special award. High Holiday services in many Detroit syna-
gogues have included efforts in support of the Israel Bond drive.
Last year more than $350,000 in Israel Bonds were subscribed
during High Holiday synagogue activities. This year, a goal of
$400,000 has been set for Detroit.
