president of the RZA, told a
press conference here that the
campaign was made necessary
by the cancelation of a $750,000
annual allocation to the organi-
zation by the United Jewish
Appeal.
The fund-raising campaign
will be known as the Religious
Israel Appeal. The funds- will be
sought from local federations in
cities throughout the United
States. The RZA will conduct
independent campaigns in com-
munities where requests for al-
locations are rejected, Rabbi
Bergman said.

"The United Jewish Appeal
will no longer include the Re-
ligious Zionists of America
among its beneficiaries in terms
of monetary allotments for re-
ligious activities in Israel," the
RZA president declared.
"Our fund-raising campaign,
to be known as the Religious
Israel Appeal, will fill the void
left by the withdrawal of mon-
etary subventions by the United
Jewish Appeal which in the past
three decades has made possible
the achievements of Mizrochi-
Hapoel Hamizrachi for a relig-
ious life in Israel.
However, the United Jewish
Appeal is still the main source
of revenue for Israel and
should continue to receive the
support of the Jewish commun-
ity at large."

Religious Zionists of America Plan
to Launch Own $2 Million Drive

NEW YORK, (JTA)—A sug-
gestion that Protestant, Catholic
and Jewish leaders get together
to approve a mutually accept-
able version of the Bible for
use in public schools was made
at the three-day annual meeting
of the National Council of
Churches Committee on Reli-
gion and Public Education held
here.
Taking part in a panel dis-
cussion on the version of the
Bible that should be used in
states where daily Bible read-
ings are required or permitted
in the public schools, the Rev.
Walter Abbott, editor of reli-
gion and humanities of the
Jesuit weekly "America," said
he sees eventually a "common
translation of the Bible accept-
able to all faiths."
Predicting that it would take
25 years for this to come about,
he called in the meantime for
Protestant, Catholic and Jewish
authorities to approve accept-
able passages for use in the
public schools. He asserted,
"I'm sure this could be done."

-- THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Not every Bar Mitzvah youth is greeted by the leader of a
nation. Yet, this is what took place when Dan Opatoshu, 13-
year-old son of noted Broadway and television actor, David
Opatoshu, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in Jerusalem recently.
Israel Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion presented him with a
personally-inscribed illustrated Bible in his office. To encourage
families from abroad to have their child's Bar Mitzvah celebrat-
ed in the land of their forefathers, the Israel Government Tour-
ist Corporation assures parents its fullest cooperation in arrang-
ing for the synagogue ceremony and the planning of other
activities which should help make the occasion an unforgettable
experience for all participants.
