Military Lauds Jewish
Welfare Board's Work
NEW YORK, (JTA) — Gen-
eral Nathan F. Twining, chair-
man of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
and key associates in the U.S.
military establishment lauded
the work of the N-tional Jewish
Welfare Board in seeking to
maintain a high level of reli-
gious, morale and welfare serv-
ices for American Jewish mili-
tary personnel and their de-
pendents as well as for hospi-
talized veterans.
Other United States military
leaders joining in the tribute
included General David M.
Shoup, U.S. Marine Corps com-
mandant; Adm. Arleigh Burke,
Chief of Naval Operations; Gen.
L. L. Lemnitzer, U.S. Chief of
Staff and Chaplain George A.
Rosso, U.S. Navy Chief of Chap-
lains.
Their views were given in
response to a series of resolu-
tions approved by the JWB 1960
biennial convention last April
in which the JWB pledged it-
self to continue and expand its
services wherever and whenever
needed. The JWB is the gov-
efnment-authorized agency for
providing for the religious, wel-
fare and morale needs of Jew-
ish military personnel.

Israel Charges of Aggression
Denied by Arab States Before UN
UNITED NATION S, N.Y.,
(JTA)—The United Arab Re-
public has denied Israeli
charges of renewed military
activity along the Syrian-Israel
border and charged in turn that
Israel "has committed no less
than 259 aggressive acts" in the
area since the start of this
year.
The UAR denial and counter-
charge was contained in a letter
submitted to the Security Coun-
cil by Omar Loutfi, permanent
representative of the UAR at
the United Nations.
He asked that the letter be
circulated among all members
of the S e cur it y Council, as
Michael S. Comay, Israel's per-
manent representative, had also
done in reference to Israel's
complaint on July 1.
The UAR letter said that the
UAR did not wish to discuss
Israel's charges "because an in-
vestigation is being carried out"
by the Israel-Syrian Mixed.
Armistice Commission "and so
far no decision has been taken
by this body." The letter added
that the Israel charges were
"baseless since the facts have
not been established."
The UAR representative
asserted that "the allegation by
Israel that there is concentra-
tion of United Arab Republic
troops in the Syrian-Israeli bor-
der area is totally unfounded.''
He said that UAR troops in
the area had not undertaken
any provocative measures "and
it is therefore entirely f a l's e
that UAR troops have renewed
unilateral armed action along
the Syrian border."
The letter added: "The ag-
gressive policy of Israel with
r e s p e c t to the demilitarized
zone is clearly indicated by the
fact that Israel has committed
no less than 259 aggressive acts
in the said zone since January
1960, regarding which the UAR
Government has submitted corn-
plaints" to the MAC.
Comay had cited five specific
attacks by Syrian gunfire which
had resulted in the death of one
border patrol office and gunfire
attacks against UN observers.
The Israel complaint cited the
Syrian attacks as occurring
between June 11 and June 28.

Standard Federal Savings Assets
Grow $10 Million in 1st Half of '60
Assets of Standard Federal
Savings and Loan Association
reached the all-time high of
$170,000,000 as of June 30, it
was announced by Walter J. L.
Ray, president of the 67-year-
old association.
The 134th semi-annual state-
ment, now being mailed to
savers and borrowers, shows
total assets of $170,440,110.90
as of June 30, which is an in-
crease of $10,308,351.10 in the
first half of 1960.
Reviewing the past six
months' activities, Ray stated
that "behind this substantial
growth has been a steady in-
crease in the number of savers
and the ability of people to
save.
"Savings increased more than
$7,000,000 t o $152,939,171.44,
the largest total in the history
of the Association. Standard
Federal Savings paid account
holders more than $2,400,000 in
dividends on June 30."
Commenting on Standard
Federal Savings' mortgage lend-
ing operation, Ray pointed out
that "the association continued
to record more mortgages on
homes in Wayne County than
any other institution. Standard
Federal's mortgage loan port-
folio now consists of more than
17,300 mortgages totaling $138,-
871,145.76."
Looking forward to the last
six months of 1960, Walter Ray
observed that "the tempo of
business activity appears to be
increasing."

INSTALL ONE WHERE YOU LIKE—EVEN IN AN
AIR - TIGHT CLOSET. When it's an electric water
heater, there's no flame, so no air is needed to
support combustion. There are no fumes to be
vented. An electric water heater is completely safe.
BUILT-IN QUALITY MAKES A BIG DIFFER-
ENCE. Every electric water heater installed
on Detroit Edison lines must meet Edison's
exacting specifications. Result: long life,
high performance for every water heater.

HOTTER WATER—PLENTY OF IT!
An electric water heater is capable
of going on and on, delivering
really hot water-160° hot—with-

side shell of the water heater cool
to the touch from top to bottom.
There's no hot metal anywhere.
