what will happen next. The
revolutionary junta has
blocked bank accounts, and
the state of excitement in the
country has brought business
to a standstill - something
which worries the Jews, most
of whom are engaged in trade.
No change is as yet expected
in the relations between Turkey
and I s r a e 1. The Democratic
Government, which tried to fol-
low a pro-Arab policy, had with-
drawn its Minister from Israel
in 1957. Since then, both coun-
tries have maintained diplomatic
relations at the Charge d'-
Affaires level. There might be a
change if the Republicans-who
were in power when Turkey
recognized Israel in 1949-come
to power. ,
New revelations have been
made about the anti-Greek riots
of Sept. 6, 1956, during. which
several Jewish shops were de-
stroyed and many Jews suffered
material damage. A statement
by former For e i g n Minister
F u a t Koprulu revealed that
Menderes himself was respon-
sible for the riots, which M.
Koprulu said were pre-arranged.
It is interesting to note that
most Jews forgot all about the
damage they suffered then,
while they still keep unpleasant
memories of Inonu's discrimi-
nations and deportations fresh
in their minds.

James Wechsler, editor of the
New York Post, has many pro-
vocative statements to make
about presidential candidates in
an election year when "many
men feel that the middle way
is the road to the White House."
In "Reflections of an Angry
Middle-Aged Editor," published
by Random House, Wechsler
writes in forthright fashion of
the current political, and social
scene, from beatniks to Nixon
(whom he calls the most corn-

plete "beatnik" in politics),
from ADA to William F. Buck-
ley, Jr. He presents cogent
reasons why, in an age of an-
think, know-nothing and do-lit-
tle, it is "difficult to tell the
beat generation that it ought to
stop pouting and start shout-
ing."
Communists and free men,

ISTANBUL - The Jews in
Turkey, who usually do not take
any active part in the country's
politics are now in a state of
"wait and see" following the
recent coup d'etat which ousted
the administration of Premier
Adnan Menderes.
Many Jews here feel secure
under the present military rule
-which is temporary-but are
concerned over the possibility
of the former president and
leader of the Republican
People's Party, Ismet Inonu,
taking power after the elections.
