JEFFERSON'S first draft of the Declaration of Independence
proffered these principles which became the basis for the Declaration:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal;
that they are endowed by their Creator with inherent and inalienable
rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

Now, 184 years later, we reaffirm these principles. On Independence Day, we also keep
in view the admonition of Abraham Lincoln: "Those who deny freedom to others deserve
it not for themselves, and, under a just God, cannot long retain it."

On this sacred day we call for solemn re-dedication to action, as inscribed on the Liberty
Bell in Philadelphia, quoting the Bible—Leviticus 25:10: "Proclaim liberty throughout
the land, unto all the inhabitants thereof."

There still are intolerable bigots in our midst—men who call themselves
Americans, yet who would desecrate our heritage by linking it with the
Nazi equivalent for barbarism. They seek the right to advocate murder
and tyranny, and thereby to deprive others of the right to freedom.

On Independence Day, this type of tyranny will surely be rejected by all
Americans, who proclaim anew the basic ideals that are the foundation
of our great Republic.

On Independence Day we adopt the slogan of John Adams: "Independence
now and forever."
