Detroiter Reports Compound to Halt Epileptic Seizures

A research scientist from the
City of Hope, Duarte, Calif.,
national Medical Center under
Jewish auspices, has reported
that a "garden variety" com-
pound familiar to every chem-
ist has helped pre-vent induced
epileptic-like seizures in labo-
ratory animals.
Dr. Eugene Roberts, chair-
man of the department of bio-
chemistry at the City of Hope,
emphasized that the results of

these experiments are "ob-
viously preliminary in nature"
in a paper delivered at the '7th
National Medicinal Chemistry
Symposium of the American
Chemical Society in Kingston,
R.I.
Raised in Detroit, Dr. Rob-
erts is a graduate of Wayne
State University and received
his Ph.D. from the University
of Michigan. He was associated
with the Manhattan Project at
the University of Rochester
during the war, and with the

levels of another substance,
gamma - aminobutyric acid
(GABA), which acts as a sort
of chemical "traffic cop" in the
central nervous system. GABA
was first reported by Dr. ROb-
erts in brain and spinal cord
only in 1950.

Collegiates of the Jewish
Center, 18100 Meyers, will have
a full summer of lounge and
special activities, in addition to
regular adult programs. The
lounge meets from 8:30 to
10:30 p.m., Wednesdays, for a
program of dancing, games and
socializing.
Committees have been ap-
pointed to plan special. pro-
grams. Committee chairmen
are: house party, Bob Cobb;
beach party, Al Sasson; activi-
ties, Joe Wedner.

Subsequent findings triggered
a search for a way to raise
brain GABA levels in normal
animals. Feeding or injection
of GABA failed to do this, and
a large number of drugs were
tested by Dr. Roberts and his
associate, Dr. Claude F. Baxter.
Hydroxylamine is the first of
these to prove effective.
