Thought-Provokin g Essay on Jews
as Writers in Karl Shapiro's New
Book, 'In Defense of Ignorance'

Chaplin's Story
Told by His Son

Charlie Chaplin's life story
usually ascribes to him a par-
tially Jewish parenthood. The
Universal Jewish Encyclopedia
states that his mother was the
music hall singer, Lily Harley.
The new "intimate portrait" of
him, "My Father, Charlie Chap-
lin," written by Charles Chap-
lin, Jr., together with N. and M.
Rau, ignored it completely.
Instead, Chap-
lin's son writes
that his grand-

The Chaplin
biography, just
published by
RandomHouse,
is an interest-
ing account of
Chcaplin
a most inter-
esting man. It paints a glorious
portrait of a great artist. It de-
molishes the stories about his
infidelity. It absolves him of
charges of Communism.
The millions who enjoyed the
Chaplin antics would undoubt-
edly be interested in the details
as presented by the great actor's
son. This biography would make
a marvelous movie.
Paulette Goddard, one of
Chaplin's wives, emerges in an
excellent light, and his pres-
ent wife and mother of seven
of his children, the former
Oona O'Neill, is his devoted
mate. Another son in addition
to Charles Chaplin, Jr., author
of this biography, is Sydney.
Another Sydney Chaplin, the
actor now residing in Eng-
land, is Charles Sr.'s brother.
An account is given of Chap-
lin's production of "The Great
Dictator," exposing Hitler, the
role played by Konrad Berco-
vici, who claimed a share in the
idea and with whom Chaplin
finally settled their score by
paying him $95,000.
"My Father, Charlie Chaplin"
is a most interesting book about
a most interesting man. It is
well written and it has special
merit for those who are inter-
ested in the theater.
