At a recent family dinner,
Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Diskin, of
Schaefer Rd., announced the
engagement of their daughter,
Marilyn, to Harry Samuel Sher-
win, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen
Sherwin, of Flint. A fall wed-
ding is planned.

SA Institute Honors
Shaws on Departure

A farewell party honoring
Dr. and Mrs. Manny Shaw, who
are leaving for New York, will
be held by the Sholem Alei-
chem Institute, 19350 Green-
field, at 9 p.m., Saturday.
The Shows have been long-
time members of the Institute,
and Mrs. Shaw has been a
music teacher in the Sholem
Aleichem School. She also is
the organizer and co-director of
the Sholem Aleichem Chorus.
Malke Shaw also has appeared
frequently as a singer, and
has taught in the Temple Israel
school, senior citizens groups of
the Jewish Center, the Farband
and other organizations.
Dr. Shaw, an officer of the
Institute, has received an ap-
pointment as a research chem-
ist in New York.

Harry Mirvis and Ronald S.
Balan will direct Kton Ton Day
Camp this summer. The camp,
which will be opne its fourth
season on June 27, will operate
from the Beth Shalom Syna-
gogue at 14601 Lincoln Road,
Oak Park.
Mirvis who holds B.A. and
M.S.W. degrees from 'Wayne
State 'University, has long been
active in working with young
people in the Jewish Commun-
ity. He served as assistant direc-
tor of the Bnai Brith Youth
Organization for seven years,
and as youth director of the
Beth Aaron Synagogue. Pres-
ently, he is youth director of
Congregation Bnai Moshe.
Balan, who has been the pro-
gram director of the camp for
three seasons also is a WSU
graduate of is presently com-
pleting his work toward a Mas-
ter's degree at the University of
Southern California. He has
taught in the Livonia schools, at
Congregations Shaarey Zedek
and Beth Shalom; as well as
having worked in the youth
department of the Jewish Cen-
ter.
Camp Kton Ton is for Jewish
children ages 4 through 12. It
provides a program of arts and
craft s, dramatics, workshop,
sports, nature trips and Judaic
content.
Applications are being accept-
ed for the entire season or for
weekly periods. For information

Rabbi's Son Granted
Yeshiva U. Degree

Lawrence Halpern, son of
Rabbi and Mrs. Israel I. Hal-
pern, of 18681 Santa Rosa, re-
ceived a bachelor or arts de-
gree in ceremonies held at
Yeshiva University on Thurs-
day.
A cum laude graduate who
was named for two years to
the Dean's List, young Halpern
was editor of the student news-
paper, The Commentator, a
member of the debating team
for four years and president
and co-founder of the literary
society.
After a year of study at the
Hayim Greenberg Center in
Israel, to which he was award-
ed a fellowship, and several
yeshivot in the Jewish state,
from which he expects to be
given semicha, Halpern will
enter Harvard Law School. He
already has been accepted for
the school year 1961-62.

MRS. NEIL ROSENTHAL

Judith Helaine Katzman and
Neil Rosenthal were united in
marriage by Rabbi Morris Ad-
ler and Cantor Jacob H. So-
nenklar, Wednesday, at Cong.
Shaarey Zedek.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Abe Katzman, of
21700 Kipling, Oak Park, and
Mr. Rosenthal is the son of Mrs.
Lester M. Rosenthal, of 25027
Rue Versailles W., Oak Park,
and the late Mr. Rosenthal.
Short shirred sleeves, an open
neckline appliqued in hand
corded Alencon lace, a fitted
bodice and garlands of match-
ing lace on the dome shaped
floor-length skirt which ex-
tended into a chapel train, high
lighted the bride's white
bouquet silk taffeta gown. A
V-shaped cap of matching Alen-
con lace held her illusion veil,
falling in two tiers to her fing-
ertips. She carried a cluster of
white orchids and stephanotis
on her Consecreation Bible.
The bridegroom's mother was
escorted to the altar by her
brother, Dr. Coleman B. Sol-
ursh, of Toronto, Ont. Others in
the bridal procession were the
bridegroom's grandfather, Mr.
Abraham Rosenthal, and his
grandmother, Mrs. Tillie Sol-
ursh, accompanied by her
grandson Dr. W. Allen Stoler.
Matron of honor was Mrs.
Samuel L. Goldstein, the bride's
sister, while bridesmaids were
Suzanne Alexander, of New
York, and Mesdames Allen Gil-
bert, Burton Gold and Harold
Goodis.
Mr. Rosenthal was attended
by Charles N. Rosen as best
man, and ushers' included
Messrs. Loren Goodman, John
Groper, of Los Angeles, Calif.,
Barry Bickrnan, of Philadelphia,
Pa., Herbert Weisenthal and
Samuel L. Goldstein.
Following dinner and a recep-
tion at Rainbow Terrace, the
couple left on a honeymoon to
Bermuda, after which they will
reside at 23241 Geneva, Oak
Park.
Out-of-town guests here for
the wedding were from Los An-
geles, Brooklyn and New York,
N.Y., Philadelphia, Springfield,
Mass., Windsor and Toronto,
Ont.

Community Service Pin

, Active participant and leader
in the Oak Park Community
Center, Mrs. Mary Polansky
has been oiled "for her tire-
less service on behalf of others"
by the Central Volunteer
Bureau of United Community
Services, which has awarded
her its highest honor, the Com-
munity Service pin.
Mrs. Polansky, of 24270 Rad-
clift, Oak Park, is an active
party planner for the center's
teen agers and also activity or-
ganizer for the senior citizens'
Going Like Sixty Club. Her
many volunteer projects for
older adults have earned the
recognition of the officers of
the Jewish Community Center.
She co-chaired the first annual
Public Affairs Institute for
Older Adults.

Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Gershen-
son, of 1700 Wellesley, an-
nounce the Bar Mitzval of their
son, Eric Paul, on Saturday, at
Temple Beth El. A reception
in honor of the Bar Mitzvah
will be held from 8 to 11 p.m.,

Kvutzah Slates Program
of Original Readings

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Katz, of

hosts Saturday evening to the
final gathering of the Kvutzah
Ivrith.
The program, at which mem-
bers read original works in
Hebrew, traditionally concludes
the season for the Kvutzah.
