Israel Inspires U.S.
to Spy on Arabs,
Moscow Charges

WASHINGTON, (JTA) —
Moscow radio has broadcast
allegations that the United
States Central Intelligence
Agency, inspired by the "Tel
Aviv friends of the aggres-
sive imperialists" is main-
taining aerial 'espionage by
U-2 spy planes flying over
the United Arab Republic,
Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and
Libya.
Moscow also charged that
the CIA informed Israel,
France and Britain of the dis-
position of UAR aircraft and
forces prior to the Sinai war.

Chile Disaster Victims
Receive Aid from JDC

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
Joint Distribution Committee
announced a gift of $5,000 for
the relief of victims of the re-
cent earthquake and tidal waves
in Chile. Moses A. Leavitt, JDC
e x e c u tive vice-chairman, an-
nounced that the funds are to
be turned over to Chilean au-
thorities through the JDC of-
fice in Buenos Aires.
The gift from the JDC is for
general non-sectarian relief,
Leavitt indicated. Special grants
may be made at a later date
to the Chilean Jewish commu-
nity, when the extent of damage
to Jewish institutions has been
determined.
Henry Levy, JDC director for
Latin America, has been as-
signed to make an emergency
survey in Chile, • and to give
some indication of future re-
construction needs. Early re-
ports indicate that Jewish com-
munities in Southern Chile have
suffered major property losses.

Assail Sabbath Fund
Activities,Gambling

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA) —
The Board of Rabbis of North-
ern California denounced - "a
growing tendency" by Jewish
organizations of scheduling -
fund-raising affairs on the Jew-
ish Sabbath as well as gambling
under synagogue auspices._ . _
In a resolution, the rabbis
said they deplored such
raising "as a desecration of the
Sabbath and the destruction.of
Jewish values."
The resolution noted "with
great apprehension" that Jevv-
ish organizations were organiz-.
ing trips "to communities
where gambling is the attrac-
tion. Though the profits to be
gained are used for philanthro-
pic purposes, -we consider this
a reprehensible practice."
The rabbis again noted their
opposition to organized gam-
bling or games of chance "un-
der synagogue auspices or in
synagogue quarters."

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — A
Spanish noblewoman, who
claims descent from the Mar-
ranos who were co n v e r t e d
forcibly to Christianity by the
Inquisition during the 15th cen-
tury, returned to Judaism and
has been accepted as Jewish by
the Rehovot Rabbinical Court.
Miss Isabel M o n i o s, 55,
resumed her original family
name "Yamin Oz," which means
"right hand of strength," and
her given name in Hebrew,

Five Russian Scientists
Awarded Lenin Prizes

PARIS, (JTA)—Five Jewish
scientists have been given the
Lenin Prize, one of the most
important awards in the Soviet
Union, according to a Moscow
report in the - Communist Yid-
dish press here.
The five named are M. Shlo-
movitch, a scientist in an elec-
tromagnetic laboratory attached
to the USSR Academy of Sci-
ence; Jacob Dzipkine, a direc-
tor of technical sciences; S. M.
Feinberg, chief of one of the
atomic energy sections; Madame
Biderman, dean of an advanced
technical school; and A. J. Le-
-vine, identified as a scientist
who contributed toward the
construction of the new Russian
plane, the Ilyuishin-18.

to Clamp Down on Bias

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Three of the 39 fraternities at
the University of Pennsylvania
were under orders to end racial
and religious discrimination in
membership practices required
by their national charters.
Gene D. Gisburne, university
vice-president for student af-
fairs, said none of the other 36
fraternities had such admission
restrictions. Under the univer-
sity order, the national fraterni-
ties — Sigma Chi, Alpha Tau
Omega and Sigma Nu — must
either eliminate the discrimina-
tory clauses from their constitu-
tions or give the University of
Pennsylvania chal,ters exemp-
tions from these clauses.
The university trustees said
failUre to -use either. alternative
would mean that tlie local chap-
ters could not continue their
affiliation with the parent orga-
t nizations.
