Swastika Painted on Coral Gables Garage

MIAMI, (JTA) — A Coral
Gables mother, who said she
had been having difficulties
with a "violently anti-Semitic"
neighbor, reported to police
that a two-foot high swastika
had been painted on her garage
door.
Mrs. Ruth Tower, who lives
with her two daughters in Coral
Gables, said that several letters,
standing for obscene words,
were plastered on the door in
white paint.

NEW YORK—Leon Uris, author of "Exodus," has criticized
the CBS Warsaw Ghetto telecast "In the Presence of Mine
Enemies," stating it "could not have been a less perfect piece
of Nazi apologetics if it had been produced by Joseph Goebbels"
. Addressing the New York Committee for World Refugee
Year, Senator Jacob Javits proposed that U.S. immigration laws
be changed in line with recommendations of President Eisen-
hower to double the number of quota immigrants . . . More
than $125,000 was raised for the America-Israel Cultural Founda-
tion at a benefit show at Madison Square Garden held in honor
of Judge Nathan R. Sobel . . . A three-month study made by a
three-man committee of the Association of Teachers of Social
Studies assailed American publishers of history textbooks used
in the New City public schools in many other cities for "pussy-
footing" and "sugar-coating" crimes committed by the Hitler
regimes.
HARTFORD, Conn.—Sigma Chapter of Delta Phi fraternity,
at Trinity College here, which accepts Jews and Negroes as
members, severed ties with the national organization for its
policy of discriminating against Jews and Negroes.
PITTSBURGH—The 1960 United Jewish Federation cam-
paign ended with a total of $1,620,295 and an eight-year record
in sight.
BOSTON—The Combined Jewish Appeal closed with a total
of $5,519,218, as compared with $5,475,000 raised in 1959.
ATLANTIC CITY—Dr. Binyamin Eliav, Israel's Consul Gen-
eral, paid tribute to the memory of Dr. ,Theodor Herzl at the
meeting of the National Council for Jewish Education . .
KIAMESHA LAKE, N.Y.—Bnai Brith District 3 reaffirmed
the principle of separation of church and state at its annual
meeting here.

JERUSALEM—West Germany cannot abandon Israel after
the expiration of reparations payments in 1963, Alfred Frenzel,
chairman of the Bundestag Reparations Committee, who is on
a two-week visit here as guest of the Israel Treasury, , and who
is discussing a proposed 500,000,000 deutschemark loan for
Israel, stated at a press conference . . . Dr. Nahum Goldmann,
who is discussing with Premier Ben-Gurion and other leaders
the future status of the Zionist movement, took sharp issue
with Ben-Gurion's statement comparing the Zionist movement
to a scaffold that is discarded after a building is constructed.
TEL AVIV—Another rich oil gusher was reported last week
from the Heletz field .. . An Egyptian plane was reported shot
down by Israeli fighters in a battle over Israeli southern
territory.
