Boston Editor to Head Publishers' Association

NEW YORK — Joseph Weis-
berg, editor of the Boston Jew-
ish Advocate, was elected presi-
dent of the American Jewish
Press Association, at the annual
convention held here last week-
end at the Park Sheraton Hotel.
He succeeds Jack Fishbein, of
the Chicago Jewish Sentinel,
who presided at all sessions.
Leo Frisch, Minneapolis; Al-
bert Golomb, Pittsburgh, and
Jules Mines, Philadelphia, were
elected vice presidents; Jimmy
Wisch, Fort Worth, Tex., secre-
tary ,and Milton Pinsky, Colum-
bus, treasurer. Members of the
executive committee chosen at
the convention are: Elias R. Ja-
cobs, Buffalo; Morris Janoff,
Jersey City; Joseph Cummins,
Los Angeles, and Adolph Ros-
enberg, Atlanta. Ex-officio mem-
bers are the past presidents,
Philip Slomovitz, Detroit; Fred
Shochet, Miami; Jacques Back,
Memphis; Abraham Slabot, New
Orleans, and Jack Fishtbein.
The editors and publishers
adopted a series of resolu-
tions commending the Jew-
ish Telegraphic Agency for
its efforts in the perfection of
methods of news - gathering;
greeted the State of Israel;
urged strengthening of means
of preventing the bombing of
public buildings by bigots,
and acted on methods of ad-
vancing the standards of the
English-Jewish press.
Joseph Meyerhoff, of Balti-
more, vice chairman of the
Jewish Agency, Inc., the newly-
organized committee of 21 for
the allocation of UJA funds
after April 1, 1961, addressed
the convention and explained
the reasons for the reorganiza-
tion of the fund - distributing
functions of the United Israel
Appeal, Jewish Agency and re-
lated movements. He denied
that there was pressure from
either government or other
sources and said that the new
set-up is a result of "a soul-
searching reappraisal" of Is-

Hammer as executive vice-
chairman of the Jewish Agency
for Israel, Inc., was announced
by Dewey D. Stone, chairman
of the Agency. Prior to his ap-
pointment,
Hammer serv-
ed as execu-
tive director
of the New
York office of
the Jewish
Agency for Is-
rael until the
recent reorga-
nization of
that body.
The Jewish
Agency for
Israel, Inc.,
through t h e
United Israel
Appeal, is the
major benefi-
ciary of the
nationwide Hammer
United Jewish Appeal cam-
paign.
Hammer joined the New
York office of the Jewish
Agency for Israel in 1944, after
having been active in banking
and public accounting. As ex-
ecutive director of the Agency,
Hammer was responsible for
the development of a wide-
spread network of banking re-
lationships for the Jewish
Agency and the United Jewish
Appeal. He is president of the
American Israeli Shipping Co.;
a director of the Citadel Life
Insurance Co.; vice president
of the American Committee of
the Weizmann Institute of Sci-
ence and a member of its board
of governors.

of Seven Arts Feature Syndi-
cate, and Saul Carson, JTA's
UN correspondent.
