Jewish Textbooks
Unbiased Against
Other Religions

NEW YORK (JTA)—Jewish
religious textbooks deserve "the
highest mark" for being free of
material prejudicial to any race,
religion or color, it was an-
nounced by scholars who have
completed a three-year study of
such texts.
The study was headed by Dr.
Bernard D. Weinryb, professor
of Jewish history at the Yes-
hiva University's Bernard Revel
Graduate School, who is also on
the faculty of the Dropsie Col-
lege for Hebrew and Cognate
Learning, Philadelphia. He was
aided by Meir Ben-Horin as con-
sultant, and by Daniel Garnick
as researcher.
Ninety percent of intergroup
references in all the texts were
found free of prejudice and, on
the other hand, teaching friend-
liness and anti-prejudice toward
"Christians, Negroes, Italians."
Most of the 10 percent of pre-
judicial matter in texts, accord-
ing to the scholars, was "left
in the texts through oversight,
reprinting material originating
in Europe, or otherwise unin-
tentional."
The study found that, in re-
ference to "interrelationship
between Orthodox, Conservative
and Reform Judaism" there was
"much more" prejudiced ma-
terial in the texts than there
was in regard to non-Jewish
groups.

Increased Education Concern Urged by Bnai Brith President

KIAMESHA L A K E, N.Y.,
(JTA)—The American rab-
binate is not doing "all it needs
to do" to help raise Jewish edu-
cation "out of its infantile pit,"
Label A. Katz, president of
Bnai Brith, said in an address
in which he urged that the
needs of Jewish education "be
treated with the same commu-
nity-wide concern and support
that is now given to overseas
philanthropy, community rela-
tions, social service and other
aspects of Jewish life."
"The rabbinate dearly wants
his," Katz told the annual con-
vention of the Bnai Brith dis-
trict here. "But is is working
haphazardly and often at odds
with itself to achieve it." The
consequence, he added, is a
"melancholy level of cultural
and religious illiteracy in Jew-
ish life. It remains an ill-defined
problem for ill-equipped con-
gregations to cope with, when
the need is for an organized
push by the full strength of the
Jewish community."
The Bnai Brith president
commended "the zeal of most
congregational rabbis in recog-
nizing that their primary re-
sponsibility is to encourage a
mature Jewish learning." But,
he said, such individual efforts
are severly limited' without the
"realistic planning and con-
certed attention on a commu-
nity rather than a congrega-
tional basis" of rabbinical and
religious bodies.
"The high hopes for an in-
creasingly creative Jewish com-
munity can be shattered unless
there is an increasingly literate
community," Katz said. "But the
education of the laity, its youth
and adults, needs a greater de-

to greater maturity, we are mu-
tually helped by the words and
needs of Pope John. In today's

role." Epstein gave a personal
account of the private audience
the Pope held with Bnai Brith
leaders in the Vatican last
January.

It is also possible under the

a cooperative non-profit housing

Pope John XXIII is playing
"an inspired role" in bringing
about closer group relations
between Catholics and Jews,
Benjamin R. Epstein, na-
tional director of the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith, said here.
"Despite basic differences
and the tragic past, Jews and
Catholics, in behalf of the com-
mon good, are finding new
areas of understanding," Ep-
stein told the convention of
Bnai Brith's District 3.
"Jews and Catholics- will con-
tinue to have different attitudes
and approaches to many prob-
lems," the ADL leader said.
"And they should have, if they
are to hew to religious princi-
ples. There is always room—
even need — in America for
differences of religious convic-
tion and opinion. There may be
irritation and angry words over
specific issues. There may be
misunderstandings too. But the
