Men's Club to Present Youth Awards Sunday at Merrill Concert Awards to outstanding young people of Adas Shalom Syna- gogue will be presented for the first time by the Men's Club in conjunction with the Robert Merrill concert at the syna- gogue at 8:15 p.m., Sunday. The ceremony, which will be- come an annual program, will feature the presentation of cer- tificates, silver medals and Is- raeli menorahs to youth who qualify for the National Federa- tion of Jewish Men's Clubs awards. Leader's Training Fellowship awards for scholastic and lead- ership ability will go to Rochelle Kraft and Gordon Sil- verman; silver kiddush cups will be given to Michael Cohen, Stephanie Shapiro and Ricky Waller; and the Ronnie Posen Memorial Awards of sterling silver spice boxes will go to Walt W i n s h a l l and Steve Cooper. The award ceremony will take place during intermission of the Merrill concert, which features the leading baritone of the Metropolitan Opera Com- pany in one of his rare visits to Detroit. Brooklyn-born Merrill played semi-professional baseball, - and was scouted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, at that time still in Brooklyn. It was while starring in a show at the Radio City Music Hall that Merrill at- tracted wide attention. He won the Met audition in 1946, and soon made his debut in- "La Traviata." For his con- cert here, Merrill will mix op- eratic arias with Yiddish and Hebrew folk music and cantor- ial selections. Tickets are available at the synagogue office, UN 4-7474, or at Grinnell's.
