News Brevities Elliott Baron, 19-year-old su- pervisor of the Jewish • Commu- nity Center's weight-lifting pro- gram, is the winner of the re- cent National AAU teen-age weight-lifting meet. Baron, of 18248 Indiana, com- peted in the 198-pound class. He lifted 220 pounds, 200 pounds and 280 pounds in the three of- ficial lift categories: military press, snatch and clean and jerk. The meet, held at the North- ern YMCA, was the first time Baron had entered AAU compe- tition. The weights were his own personal record. Baron also took third place in the physique contest, which was held to determine the teen- age Mr. America. A weight-lifter for four years, Baron has pre- viously won awards in the teen- age M1. Michigan meet, teen- age state weight-lifting competi- tion and the class C state weight-lifting meet. A 1958 graduate of Mumford High School, Baron is current- ly a liberal arts student at Wayne State University. Bagley School Scouts Seeking New Recruits A limited number of openings for boys 11 and older to partici- pate in scouting activities with Boy Scout Troop 515, which meets Tuesday evening, at the Bagley School, was announced this week by Samuel Jannett, troop committee chairman. Julian Barit is Scoutmaster of the troop, which teaches good citizenship, arts and crafts, map reading, trailing and nature study activities. Each month, troop members participate in weekend campouts. Participation of interested fathers also has been invited. Sweetheart Dance to Close AZA Season The first annual Sweetheart Dance sponsored by the Greater Detroit AZA Council will close the season's activities, it was announced this week by Mike Freedman, general chairman. The dance will be presented May 28, in the social hall of Adas Shalom Synagogue, and will feature dancing to the music of Johnny Titus and his orchestra, with Betty Brown as vocalist.
