By the Oak-Woodser
With all the seriousness of
their studies, pupils in the first
grade of the Hebrew Academy
of Oak Park took time off to
celebrate a major event in their
young lives — graduation to
"Chumash."
That the young boys and
girls were rewarded for their
efforts with a party and "tre-
mendous pieces of Mazel Tov
cake" was secondary.
The real significance to
their parents—and one can't
help thinking to the young-
sters themselves — was that
the graduation culminated a
special preparatory period
started some weeks ago by
their Hebrew teacher, Mrs.
Noa Flam.
Before graduating, each child
was tested for his or her actual
knowledge in Chumash by read-
ing and translating specific
passages.
Principal speaker at the
"graduation exercises" — and
Rabbi Israel Fiam, director of
the Academy, says they were
conducted with all the pomp of
a college ceremony—was Rabbi
Joseph Elias, dean of the Yeshi-
vath Beth Yehudah, of which
the Hebrew Academy is a part.
Each child was presented
with his own volume of the
Chumash by David Goldberg,
one of the parents, and a bag

this week is the adoption of a

English departments of the pub-
lic schools.
The move, which lets each
student progress according to
his individual merit and ability,
is expected to eliminate class-
room tension from the primary
groups, while at the same time,
benefiting those who can handle
more advanced studies.
The Hebrew Academy, which
is located in the Peter and
Pauline Goldstein Bldg., 13855
W. 9 Mile, in Oak Park, is this
month completing its second
full year of classroom studies.
When the day school com-
mences in the fall it will
offer a fourth grade class for
the first time. Studies include
intensive religious training,
a full English program and
special activities, including
arts and crafts, language in-
struction in Sp a n i s h and
French, gym and music.
Children transfering from
the public schools, Rabbi Flam
assured, suffer no setback in
regular public school courses,
and are placed in Hebrew stud-
ies according to their knowl-
edge and ability.
An extended summer session
and day camp facilities are cur-
rently being planned at the
Academy, Rabbi Flam said. For
