Men's Clubs Back 'Jewish Assembly' (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) LIBERTY, N.Y. — The Rab- binical Assembly of America, national association of conser- vative rabbis in the United States, called upon Congress Tuesday to enact into law a bill providing for hospital and nursing home care for the aged and disabled. The bill, introduced by Rep. Aime Forand, of Rhode Island, provides for the financing of such care by an increase in the Sociay Security tax. The synagogue Council of America, the national represent- ative body of the Conservative, Orthodox and Reform move- ments was urged to take the lead in the creation of "a unified democratically consti- tuted national organization to serve as spokesman of the total American Jewish community in the United States." The Assembly offered t h e services of its membership in aiding the Council to carry out such a program. Rabbi Simon Greenberg, vice chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, in an address to the Assembly, asked the delegates "to welcome every effort by the Seminary to make the tradi- tional S e m i c h a (ordination) accessible to its students and graduates." He said it was "good for Jews" to have men with the "competences repe- sented by the traditional Sem- icha," in addition to the reg- ular Seminary training. Conservative Judaism is experiencing great difficulty in recruiting leadership and in training the scholars nec- essary to maintain its position in the religious life of Amer- lean Jewry, it was empha- sized at the opening session of the five-day 60th anniver- sary convention of the Rab- binical Assembly. Reporting to about 500 rabbis who are attending the conven- tion on a survey he has recently completed on the manpower situation in Conse• ative Judaism, Dr. Eli Ginzberg, pro- fessor of economics at Colum- bia University, emphasized that the same situation exists in all major religious groups today. The rabbi who permits him- self to become entangled in such a schedule does a disserv- ice to his congregation ; accord- irig to Dr. Ginzberg, since he has no time for the quiet con- templation which alone can produce the insights and under- standing necessary for spiritual leadership. On the other • hand, the speaker admitted that the pressures put upon the rabbi to• serve in all these capacities were almost intolerable. * * * E-Secretary of U.S. Air Force Asks for U.S. Action on Suez Blockade KIAMESHA L A K E , N.
