The Men's Club of
Adas Shalom Synagogue

Presents

Discussing the special condi-
tions existing in Israel's collec-
tive settlements where children
live apart from their parents
but maintain daily contact with
them, Dr. Kaffman said that
symptoms of common behavior
problems "either matched the
figw.-es of groups outside kib-
butzim or appeared less prom-
inently."
He noted that certain charac-
teristics of the kibbutz children,
such as superior eating habits,
were due to regular standard
procedures in terms of time,
supervision and continuous
group activity.
He said that an increase in
the prevalence of thumbsuck-
ing among the kibbutz group

was attributed to the "permis-
sive behavior" in the settle-
ments and generally disap-
peared after the age of five.
Dr. Kaffman stressed the vast
possibilities of research on nor-
mal child development pro-
vided by the kibbutz system of
education.
