THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, May 6, 1960 1,500 Detroiters Jam Adas Shalom Sunday for Israel's 12th Anniversary Celebration By FRANK SIMONS Detroit Jewry participated in a king-sized celebration of Is- rael's 12th anniversary last Sunday night at Adas Shalom Synagogue. Some 1,500 people swelled the social hall to wall- stretching capacity, and another 500-600 were turned away at the door. The enthusiastic multitude was reassuring to the night's principal speaker, Ambassador Michael Comay, who with his Israeli brethren wondered 12 years ago; "What will happen when there is no war, no blood- shed, when the . state is well established? Will the people abroad lose interest?" The Ambassador, who recent- ly assumed his post 'as Israel's permanent representative at the United Nations, was com- pelled to remark: "If this eve- ning's occasion and your wel- come to me, as a representa- tive of the state, is an indica- tion, your enthusiasm is a real source of celebration." Mr. Comay recalled the mem- orable day in the United Nations when the State of Israel was created. "The only quiet Jews in New York that night were the Israelis because we knew that the road ahead was filled with difficulties. "All alone," he continued, "Israelis gathered in the museum at Tel Aviv to sign a Declaration of Independ- ence. But they felt almost as if they were signing their own and their children's death warrants. "Some 6,000 young men—the cream of the crop—died_ after that, but they stopped the Arabs 20 miles from Tel Aviv and in the suburbs of Jerusa- lem. Still we were not allowed to say `Dayenu.' There was still a state to build." The Ambassador continued: "At a time when we were dis- organized and ill-prepared, an- other army came marching in —an army of destitute Jews from the Nazi concentration camps, from behind the barbed wire of Cyprus, from the Arab lands. "They came at the rate of 1,000 a day, and they weren't the picked immigration of the United States today. There were well people and sick people. People coming to die. But they were coming home. "The thing that really mat- ters about Israel is its willing- ness to take in all Jews. It is not fighting wars or deliver- ing speeches at the United Nations. What is important is the job Israel has to do. It is licking the Jewish problem so that never again will there be a homeless Jew in the world. "On Yom Ha-Atzmaut," Am- bassador Comay said, "we have to tell ourselves that Israel is a job only half done. The state is on a solid foundation, and we are forging ahead." He called for investments in Israel, but insisted that those who can't afford to invest can at least see Israel for them- selves by visiting. The standing ovation given to Comay was repeated at the close of the evening's pro- gram when the Ambassador joined members of Habonim and others in the audience in a joyful hora. The program opened with the presentation of the colors by the Jewish War Veterans and Habonim, the singing of the national anthems, led by Leah Koven, and an invocation by Rabbi Jacob E. Segal, of the host congregation. Mrs. Irving Posner, acting chairman of the Zionist Council, which sponsored the anniver- sary event jointly with the Jew- ish Community Council, was the evening's chairman. She introduced Stanley J. Winkelman, who is slated to be the new president of the Jewish Community Council, and also welcomed Ambassador Comay. Joshua Stiele, leading tenor of the National Hebrew Opera Co., was guest soloist, and there were some fine dance numbers by Habonim's Dance Group. Before the program closed with the mass hora, Danny Atlas played the accordian, and there were some impromptu songs by Arella, an Israeli vocalist not mentioned on the evening's program. The gay close put a fine touch to a very happy birthday celebration. Rep.
