Appointment of Dr. Henry J.
Meyer as research consultant
for the Jewish Vocational Serv-
ice and the Community Work-
shop was announced this week
by Robert S. Amberg and David
M. Welling, respective pres-
idents of the two agencies.
Dr. Meyer, head of the doc-
toral program in social work
and professor
of sociology at
the University
o f Michigan,
will assist in
planning and
implementing
a new three-
year research
program in-
volving t h e
evaluation of
Dr. Meyer employability
of psychiatric patients awaiting
separation f r o m Northville
State Hospital.
The project is being conduct-
ed under a research grant. from
the United States Office of Vo-
cational Rehabilitation.
The co-author of a recent
book, "An Experiment in Men-
tal Patient Rehabilitation,"
which he wrote with Dr. W. E.
Borgatta, Dr. Meyer previously
engaged in a series of studies
for the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion on economic structure and
the mobility pattern in the local
Jewish community.
He is currently engaged in
two research projects, one in-
volving unwed. mothers and the
other evaluating the effective-
ness of social work in interrupt-
ing deviant careers of adoles-
cent girls.

tered seven softball leagues at
the Jewish Center.
Round robin play is now be-
ginning, to continue through
June. All games are played
Sundays, starting at 1:30 p.m.,
except the Senior League, which
plays Sunday mornings.
A Senior League for Young
Adults, Adults and Health Club
men will play at the main build-
ing. Two Teen Leagues are in
action, with eight teams in Class
A, playing at the main building
and the Bagley School, 8100
Curtis. Ten teams are in Class
B, playing at Lugar Field,
Seven Mile and Tracy, and at
Bagley School.
Thirteen teams are in Class
C. Tween League, playing at
Mumford High School. Twelve
teams. are in two Junior
Leagues, the National League
(11-12 years) and the American
League (9-10 years), playing at
the McDowell School, W. Outer
Drive at Mendota. Eight teams
are in the Teen-Tween Girls'
League, playing at the Schultz
School, 10700 Santa Maria.
Carl T. Rowan, a free-lance
writer and lecturer, will ad-
dress the annual luncheon meet-
ing of the Temple Beth El Sis-
terhood on Monday afternoon,
in the temple.
The program also will serve
to install the following officers:

The guest speaker, a newspa-
perman for 10 years, was select-
ed in 1954 as one of the 10 out-

"The Four Great Issues of Our
Time."
The winner of many awards,
Rowan received his master's de-
gree in journalism from the
University of Minnesota. He was
one of this country's first Ne-
groes to become a naval officer
during World War II.

MSU Honor Scholarships

Honors Scholarships have been
awarded to four local high
school students who recently
competed for Alumni Dis-
tinguished scholarships and
General Motors scholarships,
the scores being sufficiently
high to recommend them.
They are Jerome David Cohn
and Arnold Sheldon Weintraub,
of Henry Ford high, and Ste-
phen Lee Sniderman, of Mum-
ford high.
Honors scholarships cover the
tuition fees for four years at
MSU if satisfactory grade levels
are kept.

Deshe on Women Poets
"Women Poets in Israel," the
third of a series of four lectures
for the Kvutzah Ivrith Hebrew
cultural group of Detroit, will
be delivered by Michael Deshe,
noted Israeli poet, educator and
lecturer, at 9:15 p.m., Saturday,
in the Jewish Community Cen-
ter, 18100 Meyers.
Chairman will be Michael
Michlin. The lecture will be pre-
ceded by the activities of the
Pinah Ivrith, Hebrew Corner,
sponsored jointly by the Cen-
ter and the Kvutzah Ivrith,
