'No Fueling' Gas IS Best in Israel

Zohar Fields Offer Great
Potential to State's Industry

Natural gas from the Dead Sea region will soon
power a vital sector of Israel's industry. Substantial
quantities of methane gas have been discovered in five
wells drilled at Rosh Zohar in a mountainous desert area
30 miles east of Beersheba. The gas will partially replace
oil as a fuel substance . . Drilling in Israel's first gas
field began in 1956 with the aid of funds provided
through the Israel Bond drive.

These scenes at the Zohar Gas Fields,
site of Israel's latest and biggest dis-
covery of natural gas, demonstrate the
work that goes on to boost Israel's
economy through the Israel Bond cam-
paign. Shown at the left is an Israel

his 12-hour shift. Workers spend a

a Salute Jo achievement

Somewhere in Ghana or Burma one can hear Hebrew spoken with

an Israeli accent. For Israel has acquired a new role of teacher and guide

among the underdeveloped nations of Africa and Asia.

How has Israel achieved this position in twelve short years? The

answer can be given in one word: ACHIEVEMENT.

Achievement in reclaiming desert land — achievement in creating

new industries — achievement in rescuing and resettling many hundreds of

thousands of refugees — achievement in the revival of Jewish spiritual and
cultural values — achievement in the development of a dynamic democracy.

To a very substantial degree this record of achievement was the

result of the resources made available by more than 1,000,000 investors in
State of Israel Bonds. From 1951, when the sale of Israel Bonds was inaugu-

rated, until the beginning of 1960, Israel Bond sales reached $425,000,000.
Channeled into every strategic avenue of economic growth, these dollars have
helped the people of Israel rise from the depths of austerity to the threshold

of prosperity.

Israel's pioneering is not yet ended. There are new frontiers of settle-
ment and industry still to be developed, additional newcomers to be inte-
grated, and vast areas of science and culture to be penetrated and conquered.

Thanks to the productive use of Israel Bond investments, the State
of Israel had its best year in 1959. It looks forward to EVEN GREATER
HEIGHTS of economic progress in 1960, if the flow of investment dollars

is accelerated.

Many of us in Detroit who thrilled to the creation of the State of
Israel and watched its subsequent development with admiration and pride,
have through our personal "Bond With Israel" entered into a partnership in
achievement and personal satisfaction almost without parallel in our time.

In this, Israel's Twelfth Anniversary Year, the more than a million
investors who have bought Israel Bonds will be joined by many more
Detroiters in giving their support to Israel Bonds — the central instrument
in forging a secure, free and prosperous Israel.
