The Broadway play by Dore
Schary, "The Highest Tree," has
just been is-
sued by Ran-
dom House as
a Random
House Play.
In a foreword
to the pub-
lished text,
Adlai Steven-
son commends
it as "poig-
nant and ab-
sorbing" a n d
as a good, uni-
versal drama.
Other Ran-
dom House Dore Schary
plays just published include the
following:
"All the King's Men," by
Robert Penn Warren; "A Loss
of Roses," by William Inge;
"Gypsy," book by Arthur Lau-
rents, music by Jule Sryne,
lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the
play having been suggested by
the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.
The four volumes contain
photographs of scenes from the
respective plays.
In his foreword to "A Loss
of Roses," Inge writes that he
had never gone into a play's
production with as much confi-
dence, in spite of this play's
complete failure. His explana-
tion of changes that came too
late, of judgments and ap-
proaches will provide a great
deal of interest to students of
drama.

Neher's 'Moses' . •
an Historically
Valuable Volume
Among the classics issued in
paperbacks is a Harper edition
of "Moses-and the Vocation of
the Jewish People," by Andre
Neher, in an English transla-
tion from the French by Irene
Marinoff.
It is part of the "Men of Wis-
dom" series. Richly illustrated,
it incorporates such a mass of
material about the Great Law-
giver that it should serve most
valuably as both reference and
text book.
Because of its extensive refer-
ences to Pass.., per and . the Ex-
odus, Neher's "Moses" makes
appropriate reading during the
current festival.
The views of the leading
authorities on Moses, the
Passover, the Christian deriv !
ations of Easter from Pass-
over, the Seder ceremony,
Mosaic teachings, the Law-
giving-these and many more
aspects of the,Moses story are
a part of this interesting pa-
perback.
To emphasize the significance
of the Exodus, Neher includes
in his text an unfinished poem
by the young Jewish philoso-
pher Benjamin Fondane, who
was dragged off to Auschwitz.
For his section on "The His-
torical Moses," Neher goes to
Egyptian and other sources, as
well as the Bible. He turns to
Modern as well as ancient writ-
ers for his information. A sim-
ilar pattern is applied in his
description of "The Calling of
Moses."
The seven trends in the
"Faith Kept by. the Jewish
People with Moses" contains
additional valuable material,
with quotations from Edmond
Fleg, Maimonides, Abrahain
Heschel and others.
The illustrations are valuable
in all - inStances, and modern art
works as well as ancient arch-
aeological findings are included
in the scores upon scores of pic-
tures.
An interesting historical Jew-
ish chronology includes facts
about religious events, great
men, political events and world
history.
