friended many New Jersey state
leaders.
The story of his life is told
in his autobiography, "High
Windows," published by Whit-
tier Books (31 Union Sq. W.,
N. Y. 3). In it he relates his
childhood on New York's East
Side, his fight with youngsters
who uttered anti - Jewish re-
marks, his schooling, his love
for the Yiddish theater.
He married a rich girl, but
he made his own success in
business. He became interested
in veterans' affairs, having
served overseas in World War
I. He was active in the Ameri-
can Legion, then became an im-
portant factor in the Jewish
War Veterans ranks. He edited
the JeWish Veteran for a time
and was co - author with J.
George Fredman of "Jews in
American Wars."
Then he became active in
Zionism, and was the renovator
of New Jersey Zionist circles.
Thanks to him, a strong state-
wide Zionist movement
emerged. He became a national
ZOA leader and attended World-
wide conventions.
His; life's work and his book
are highly commended by Dr.
Samuel Margoshes, in an intro-
duction to "High Windows."

Egyptian Prison-Break
Leader is Acquitted
of Charge of Murder

TEL AVIV, (JTA) — A self-
styled journalist of Egypt, who
led the Shatta prison break in
1958, was acquitted by the
Haifa district court of charges
of murdering the warden in the
escape attempt. The court ruled
that the prosecution failed to
prove that Ahmed Ali Othmann
actually took part in or planned
the killing of the warden.
Othmann, responding to the
verdict with a smile, said he
was "rather surprised" by the
"just verdict." He. must still
face trial on charges of organ-
izing and participating in an
unlawful escape from the pris-
on. The defendant, who speaks
five languages, was accused of
planning and participating in
the escape on July 31, 1958
from the prison in northern
Israel which housed dangerous
infiltrators. He was wounded
and captured during the escape
attempt.
