This year, only 22 German- speaking pictures were submit- ted for censorship compared to 88 last year. Of the total number of 458 movies imported last year, the United States still leads with 178, but is losing ground com- pared to last year's 216. Increases were registered on film imported from France (86 compared to 58), Britain (52 compared to 32), Italy (31 com- pared to 15), Soviet Union (11 compared to eight), Spain (12 compared to five), India (19 compared to nine), and Egypt (25 compared to 20). However, last December, a ban was imposed on imports of films from Egypt and other hostile countries. The 23 films banned by censorship in-aided six being too sympathetic to Germany. Five of them were made in America, and only one in Germany.
