"Tante" Koek and "Tante" Muess
are two "aunts" from Holland. All
immigrants from Holland in Israel
know these two Christian "aunts",
for during the War they saved many
Jewish children from the Nazis.
Before the War the two Christian
"aunts" were teachers in a Jewish
trades school in Amsterdam. When
the War broke out they established
a private organization to save Jew- .
ish children. They went from house
to house and took the Jewish chil-
dren with them. In the house of the
two "aunts" in Amsterdam 15 Jew-
ish girls hid for two years during
the War. They also paid money to
farmers in the villages to conceal
other Jewish children. From time to
time they brought clothing and food
for the children. Of course, in
Amsterdam of the year 1943 this
was very dangerous.
Seven of their fifteen "daughters"
are today living in Israel and re-
cently (a short time ago) the
"aunts" came to visit them and
their "grandchildren."
"Our fifteen daughters," the
"aunts" from Holland relate, "have
fifteen children, and these are our
grandchildren."

Caroline Hart, a direct de-
scendant of Aaron Hart, the
first Jew to settle permanently
in Canada, was an - outstanding
school teacher who was super-
visor of a model school for kin-
dergarten teachers in Toronto
from 1885 to 1892.
In 1890 she was made inspec-
tor of all the kindergartens in
the Province of Ontario. This
was a new venture, at the time,
and in the official organ of the
kindergarten movement of
America it was said of her:
"The rapid extension of the
kindergartens throughout Onta-
rio and the Dominion of -Can-
ada has been mainly due to her
ability and enterprise. Canadi-
an kindergartens speak her
name with pride and gratitude."
