House of Rothschild Illarks Its 200th Anniversary

By ERWIN FETTERS

(Standard Feature Syndicate)

The Rothschilds, famous fam-
ily of bankers and businessmen,
derive their name from the sign
of a red shield on house No. 143
in the Judengasse ("Jew
Street") in Frankfort-on-the-
Main. The , old, unpretentious
building, completely restored in
1886, is still in the possession
of the Rothschilds, serving as a

memorial.
The earliest notice of a mem
ber of the Rothschild family
given in the burial records of
Frankfort, is that of Moses
Rothschild (1515).
The first Rothschild of any
prominence was Amschel Moses,
a small merchant and money-
changer in Frankfort; his son,
Mayer Amschel, who in 1760
started his banking business
and became financial adviser to
several German princes, was a
dealer in antique coins. By
keen foresight and financial in-
tegrity, he laid the foundation
for what was to become the
most famous banking firm in
E u r ope. The five brothers
(nicknamed "the Five Franks")
dispersed. The youngest, James,

James de Rothschild
settling in Paris, founded the
banking firm of Rothschild
Freres in 1817.
In the Napoleonic wars, the
Rothschilds generously sup-
ported the cause of the Allies
against Napoleon.
They opened banking
branches in Austria, France and
England, and the next genera-
tion was in a position to loan
important sums to emperors,
kings and nobility, doing so at
the moderate rate of 5%. From
1817 on, the brothers Roths-
child, in their collective capa-
city, were reported to be Eur-
ope's richest bankers.,
The Vienna branch financed

the construction of the first rail-
road, the North Railway, and
bought Austria's rich quick-
silver mines. They loaned mil-
lions of gulden to the impover-
ished Austrian nobility, financed
railroads in many other coun-
tries, made substantial loans
and wrote out insurance poli-
cies.
The sound business prin-
ciple on which the Rothchilds
acted was the unified policy
of the five, later four and finally
three firms in London, Paris
and Austria. In whatever coun-
tries they settled, the Roths-
childs were ardent patriots in
their respective lands.
The English Rothchilds, for
instance, headed by Lionel, who
was the first Jew to have a seat
in the British House of Com-
mons, financed in 1858 the Eng-
lish purchase of the Suez Canal.
Previously, Lionel had granted
a loan of $48,000,000 to finance
the Crimean War; in 1847, he
Baron Edmon de Rothschild,
also financed the "Irish Famine
'Father of the Yishuv'
Loan."
During the next hundred French Council of State of lib-
years, the Rothschilds were also erated Fr an ce, returned to
generous philanthropists and Baron Rothschild his citizen-
ship and all his vast possessions
and art treasures confiscated by
Vichy in 1940 on the charge of
"flight from his native land."
But the damage was done, and
millions were lost.
