Unnaturalness of Man's Escape from Self Portrayed in A ndre Gorz's Book, The Traitor'

writes a 36-page foreword to an
autobiography, the book is cer-
tain to draw more than the
usual amount of attention.
This is the case with "The
Traitor," by Andre Gorz, which
was translated from the French
by Richard Howard.
Jean-Paul Sartre. the noted
author, wrote the foreword to
this thought-provoking w o r k,
which was published by Simon
and Schuster (630 5th, N.Y. 20),
under the title "Rats and Men."
It not only fits in well with
the theme — the confessional
of the author being on the ap-
proaches of We, They, You and
I—but offers observations that
are helpful towards an under-
.
standing of the author and his
text.
Gorz, being half Jew and half
Catholic, who suffered from the
plague of Nazism in his native
Vienna, is the tragic character
who, in order to imitate his
friends and to gain the favors
that were so direly needed at
the time, wore a swastika and
heiled the fuehrer.
That is where the we title
comes in for the first portion
of the book. It is the we who re-
ject the personality of man.
Then there is the they, the an-
tagonistic collective s o c i e t y,
followed by the you, involving
the relationship with the fellow
man, and at last the I, who
emerges as a new being who
